The Purchasing Manager/Director is responsible for overseeing all procurement activities related to raw materials, packaging, ingredients, and operational supplies within the food, beverages, and tobacco industry. This role ensures cost-effective purchasing while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement strategic sourcing plans for ingredients, raw materials, packaging, and indirect goods.
Align purchasing strategies with production schedules, seasonal demand, and business objectives.
Analyse market conditions and global commodity trends (e.g., sugar, grains, flavourings, tobacco leaf, packaging materials).
Identify and implement cost-saving and value-improvement initiatives across the supply chain.
Source, evaluate, and manage suppliers based on quality, cost, sustainability, and reliability.
Negotiate long-term supply agreements and price contracts.
Conduct supplier performance evaluations, audits, and risk assessments.
Foster strong, ethical relationships with both local and international suppliers.
Ensure all purchased materials meet company quality standards and comply with industry regulations (e.g., HACCP, ISO 22000, FDA, FSSC 22000, local food safety laws).
Collaborate with the Quality Assurance (QA) and R&D departments to maintain product integrity and traceability.
Support sustainability initiatives (e.g., ethical sourcing, reduced packaging waste).
Manage the daily procurement of ingredients, packaging, equipment, and maintenance materials.
Ensure the timely availability of critical inputs to avoid production downtime.
Maintain accurate procurement records, forecasts, and inventory data using ERP systems.
Work closely with production, logistics, and finance teams to optimize stock levels and cash flow.
Monitor and control procurement budgets and costs.
Mitigate supply chain risks related to market volatility, weather, and geopolitical factors.
Develop contingency plans to ensure continuous supply of key materials.
Evaluate total cost of ownership and drive process improvements to enhance profitability.
Requirement
The ideal candidate will bring either formal academic qualifications or proven hands-on experience, with a strong emphasis on practical skills and the ability to contribute effectively to the role.

Strong attention to details, with the ability to ensure accuracy and completeness of requirements and documentation.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines.
