Job Description

Bring your mechanical design expertise to a fast-moving consumer product team in London. This Contract Product Design Engineer role offers the chance to take ownership of mechanism and packaging challenges, working hands-on with CAD and prototypes. It's a one-month contract (likely to extend), outside IR35, paying 350-500/day, hybrid with 2-3 days onsite.

Scope of the Role

As a Contract Design Engineer, you'll focus on packaging complex assemblies into functional, manufacturable solutions that prove feasibility.

Repackage existing CAD into new assemblies and layouts Develop mechanisms for actuation, locking and multi-mode interaction Build prototypes and rigs to demonstrate ergonomics and usability Work with engineers to hand over concepts into downstream development

Key Skills and Experience Required

To succeed as a Contract Design Engineer, you'll need proven experience in consumer product mechanical design.

Mechanical design for consumer products such as handhelds or appliances Strong background in mechanism design and packaging assemblies CAD proficiency (SolidWorks preferred, Creo acceptable) Experience with injection moulding, plastics, DFM principles Hands-on prototyping and iterative rig development
