Maldon, Essex (Hybrid -- 1 day per week in office)
Salary:
32,000 - 35,000
About Roamwild
We design clever products that solve real problems. We're a small, profitable, family run business based in Essex, and we're growing.
We don't do gimmicks. We don't do "innovation theatre." We make physical products that work beautifully, ship globally, and make people's lives easier.
Now we're looking for a Product Designer to own the full development journey, from initial concept through CAD, prototyping, tooling, and production to help us bring more great products to market.
The Role
This is a hands on, end to end product design role. You won't be handing off CAD files and wondering what happened. You'll see your work on shelves, in customers' homes, and in five star reviews.
You'll be responsible for:
Taking product concepts and developing them into production ready designs
Creating detailed SolidWorks models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings
Designing for injection moulding - understanding draft, wall thickness, gating, parting lines
Prototyping and testing mechanisms until they work perfectly
Managing the relationship with our Far East manufacturing partners - sample reviews, tooling feedback, production ramp up
Working closely with our founder and the wider excited entrepreneurial team
Owning timelines, flagging issues early, and keeping projects moving
You won't be expected to:
Generate all the product ideas yourself (though your input is always welcome)
Manage a team or navigate corporate politics
Sit in endless meetings or write decks
Who We're Looking For
You're an experienced product designer who's taken physical consumer products from concept to mass production more than once. You know what good looks like because you've done it.
You have:
8+ years of experience in physical product design (consumer goods, homewares, housewares, outdoor, hardware, or similar)
Expert level SolidWorks skills - assemblies, configurations, production ready drawings
Deep understanding of injection moulding and DFM principles
Hands on prototyping experience - 3D printing, model making, testing
Direct experience working with Far East manufacturers - you've reviewed T1 samples, negotiated tooling, navigated cultural differences
A calm, organised, self-directed working style - you don't need chasing
You are:
Detail oriented without being paralysed by perfectionism
A problem solver by instinct - when something goes wrong, you fix it
Positive, low-ego, collaborative - easy to work with
Genuinely interested in how things are made
Looking for stability, ownership, and craft - not rapid career progression or equity
Just 1 day per week in our picturesque Maldon facility, the rest from home
Genuine ownership:
You're the product design function, your work matters
Stability:
We're very profitable, growing, and have been established for 30+ years
Direct impact:
See your designs manufactured, shipped, sold, and reviewed
No bureaucracy:
Small team, quick decisions, minimal meetings
Work-life balance:
We work hard during work hours and respect personal time
USA & UK offices:
Opportunity to work from our US office
What We Don't Offer
Let's be honest about what this role isn't:
This isn't a rocket ship startup with equity and exit potential
This isn't a role where you'll build and manage a team
If you're looking for those things, that's completely fine - but this isn't the right fit.
What This Role Is
This is a role for someone who:
Wants to do excellent work and see it ship
Values craft, ownership, and seeing projects through
Is ready to settle somewhere they're trusted and valued
Wants to go home at a reasonable hour knowing they've built something real
If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
How to Apply
Send us:
Your CV
A portfolio or examples of work
- we want to see physical products you've taken through to manufacture, not just renders. Show us the messy middle: prototypes, tooling challenges, production samples.
A short note
(a few sentences is fine) telling us why this role interests you
A Note on the Process
We're a small team, so we'll review every application personally. If you're a fit, we'll invite you for a conversation - informal, no trick questions. We want to understand how you work, what you've made, and whether we'd enjoy working together.
We're not in a rush to fill this role with the wrong person. We'd rather wait for the right one.
