For over 50 years, SIP (Industrial Products) Ltd has been a flagship supplier of high-quality machinery and equipment to the ever-growing engineering, construction, automotive and agriculture marketplaces. We're looking for a Product Development Engineer to join our team.

Role Purpose:

The Product Development Engineer (Technical) will support all steps of the new & existing product development cycle, being directly involved in the development of a product from its concept through to its launch. They will collaborate closely with other departments to deliver high quality products to market, whilst maintaining our exceptional customer experience. The Product Development Engineer will join a dynamic technical team responsible for launching ~100 new products per year, with a view to sustainably grow this figure in the next few years.

Main Duties and Responsibilities



Contribute towards the new product development cycle throughout its ideation, development and commercialisation stages:

Ideation - Collaborate with the new product development team to identify new market opportunities or expand current product ranges. Identify and understand relevant compliance obligations, the testing that is required to ensure product compliance, and review 3rd party test laboratory reports.

Development - Create testing criteria for prototype units, designed to evaluate performance and determine endurance limits. Conduct product testing to guarantee exceptional product quality and refine designs through modification reports if necessary. Author technical test reports and modifications reports to present findings to the new product development team. Create technical files for new products, including detailed instruction manuals, drawings, bills of material, specifications, service manuals, and final random inspection requirements. Prepare critical spares and spares lists and analytically determine required stock levels based on previous stock movements.

Commercialisation - Carry out product landing inspections and quality checks. Produce product videos such as quick start guides, product orientations, and how-to / troubleshooting guides. Identify opportunities for cross-selling existing items and potential new accessories.

Lead on the implementation of a new product information database and its deployment. Offer insights into potential departmental efficiencies and new methods of working. Responsible for annual equipment calibration and record keeping. Implement a system to facilitate the a more efficient use of space for stocked spare parts.

Assist the Technical Quality Assistant with inbound/outbound quality inspections and monitoring. Perform root cause analysis on product failures to evaluate whether they stem from quality-related concerns. Document product failures and generate non-conformance reports to eliminate or reduce product quality/performance issues. Review final random inspection reports of manufactured products to ensure a high product quality.

Internal and External Relationships



Purchasing - Work with the Purchasing Manager to provide guidance when dealing with technical queries arising from suppliers. Suggest suitable packaging materials and methods to eliminate product transit damage, whilst mitigating the use of non-recyclable or wasteful materials (e.g. in line with the UK's Plastic Packaging Tax). Identify alternative suppliers of critical spare parts in order to provide supply chain resilience.

Marketing - With the Product Manager contribute to the creation of technically accurate and detailed marketing assets such as sales literature, brochure information, website listings and focus cards. Collaborate on the planning of product lifecycles, roadmaps and market opportunities. Support the catalogue proofreading process by reviewing the relevant technical areas.

Customer Experience - Support the customer service teams to deliver a satisfactory resolution of customer technical faults in line with company KPIs, by publishing supporting literature, or by directly responding to technical product queries/issues.

Service - Provide briefings to in-house service engineers and service agents for new products. Identify potential product quality issues and provide assistance on warranty issues.

Internal/External Sales - Where required, attend conference and shows to support the sales team with technical enquiries/demonstrations.

Qualifications and Experience



Essential criteria

A degree (BSc/MEng) in Mechanical Engineering / similar STEM subject, or comparable industrial experience.

Demonstrable experience in a similar product development, or technical sales role.

Experience in producing and managing technical files and documentation.

Desirable criteria

Knowledge of welder, air compressors and/or other industrial products sold by SIP Industrial Products Ltd.

An understanding of UK and EU product safety laws and how to ensure that products are compliant.

Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Experience in writing test procedures and undertaking testing to evaluate product performance.

Skills and Abilities



A proactive, customer focused mindset that strives to enhance the SIP customer experience.

Proficient user of all Microsoft Office applications, with additional knowledge of Power BI, SharePoint and VBA an advantage.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, collaborating across departments.

Self-motivated to consistently develop, learning new skills and taking advantage of training opportunities.

Knowledge of ISO9001:2015 is preferable.

Experience using project management tools.

Basic or intermediate knowledge of CAD.
