Based in Hillington, Glasgow, Coughtrie International has been manufacturing luminaires for
arduous environments since 1940. The Coughtrie brand holds a reputation for fast lead time,
excellent customer service and great quality.
Due to growth of the business, there are now a further two brands - J&G Coughtrie and
Montrose Manufacturing.
J&G Coughtrie serves the market with iconic luminaires that were designed some 50 years
ago, are highly desirable still in circulation today. These classic fittings are used across a
multitude of applications ranging from the last paddle steamer in Scotland - The Waverley -
to period homes.
Montrose Manufacturing is our sub-contract brand which provides custom cables, looms,
PLCs and mechanical sub-assemblies.
Relentless focus on product excellence, on-time delivery and customer experience are at the
heart of everything we do and as part of the ongoing design investment we have created a
new and exciting position within our engineering department.
Why This Role Matters
As our
Product Innovation Engineer
, you'll be the spark behind new products and the driving force behind modernising our classics. You'll work hand-in-glove with our Manufacturing Engineer to take fresh ideas from sketch to showroom, weaving together mechanical design, electronics and wireless tech into robust, user-friendly fittings.
What You'll Own
Concept & Systems Design
Generate well thought-out concepts and ideas and rapid-fire sketch concepts for new luminaires, fittings and smart products.
Architect embedded modules: Bluetooth, Zigbee, sensors, into mechanical layouts.
Hands-On Prototyping
Build and iterate prototypes, using your multidisciplinary engineering competencies which may include, using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, 3D-printing, and board-level electronics.
Run and organise functional testing (electrical, thermal, IP, wireless range, EMC) to validate designs.
CAD & Documentation
Produce polished SolidWorks models and manufacturing drawings.
Define materials, finishes, tolerances, and ensure design-for-manufacture & sustainability is baked into every product.
Innovation & Integration
Scout & Fuse Emerging Tech:
Stay ahead of the curve; evaluate new sensors, wireless modules, and materials, then weave the strongest innovations into our next-generation products.
Drive Rapid Experimentation:
Champion mini hack-athons and focused design sprints that transform bold concepts into de-risked prototypes, fuelling a steady flow of game-changing tech into our product pipeline.
Production Handoff
Collaborate with the Manufacturing Engineer to refine designs for sustainability, tooling, assembly, and cost targets.
Support first-off builds, help create work instructions, and tweak designs based on shop-floor feedback.
Who You Are
Maker at Heart:
You tinker 'off-duty' at home with woodwork, metalwork, Arduino projects, CNC milling, programming, or 3D printing; living for that "YES, it works!" moment.
Relentless Problem Solver:
You thrive on tackling tough engineering challenges and take pride in devising robust solutions where others hit roadblocks.
CAD & Electronics Savvy:
Fluent in SolidWorks and comfortable laying out simple PCBs and wiring up break-out modules.
Hands-On Innovator:
You don't wait for perfect specs, you sketch, prototype, break, fix and iterate until your design is polished.
Communicator & Collaborator:
You bridge the gap between vision and reality, translating bold ideas into clear instructions for engineers and suppliers.
Quality-Driven:
You understand robustness; IP ratings, thermal management, EMI; and build that thinking into every design.
Think Differently:
You embrace unconventional thinking (including neuro-diversity) as your superpower, spotting creative solutions others might miss.
Education:
You will have a degree in engineering and/or be able to demonstrate the technical skills required to excel in this role.
