Job Description

The Distillery Operator performs all production processes at Benriach, but may be required to cover at Glenglassaugh and Glendronach on occasion. The position requires self-managed, self-directed personnel with above average technical and people skills. The operator will be cross-trained in all aspects of the distillery and is expected to have the ability to complete the job at hand in a safe, efficient, and quality-oriented manner. The Distillery Operator is also expected to maintain equipment, trouble-shoot problems, follow directions and procedures, possess a positive attitude in the presence of the public and work well with other operators. Responsibilities:

  • Perform multiple and diverse production duties in the distillery and spirits store (i.e. grain receiving and handling, milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation, by-product handling, barrel filling and disgorging, blending, basic barrel repair and raw materials handling.)
  • Conduct various quality control tests and procedures (e.g. temperature, alcohol content, grain sieve analysis, chemical analysis, etc.) to assure that incoming raw materials, work-in-progress and finished product meet the desired quality requirements.
  • Effective, orderly and accurate record keeping of operational activities and test results.
  • Perform general maintenance, preventive maintenance, sanitation and general clean-up functions pertaining to production tools and equipment. Assist maintenance personnel when needed.
  • Effectively troubleshoot and resolve operational problems when they occur. Consult with the Production Foreman, Distilleries Production Manager and Distillery Manager when situations exist that require collective reasoning.
  • Read, comprehend, and comply with all production operation directives and procedures.
  • Maintain and service plant buildings, grounds, facilities and utilities equipment as needed.
  • Conduct all work in a safe and responsible manner following the plant’s rules and regulations, taking an active role in developing a safety culture.
  • Communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms using email and computer programs to other members of staff as needed.
  • Complement other plant operations as needed.
  • Assist in developing and updating SOPs and risk assessments.
  • Supporting continuous improvement and TPM.
Job Requirements:
  • Have relevant experience in a manufacturing operation or in an environment that requires and develops a disciplined work ethic and good technical, automation and hands-on skills.
  • Naturally inclined to work in a safe manner, following procedures, using appropriate PPE and looking out for own and colleague’s welfare.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form using computers and email. Good interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated mathematical skills for basic calculations and experience of basic numerical spreadsheets.
  • Demonstrated basic analytic aptitude to determine whether raw materials, work-in-progress and finished goods meet acceptable quality standards.
  • Capable of trouble-shooting process and technical issues as they arise.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a self-directed and self-motivated environment.
  • Will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment including steel-toed shoes as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule and overtime to meet demands.
  • Complete in-house and external training programs when required.
  • Fork Lift Driver’s license would be advantageous (or training will be provided).
  • A technical or engineering qualification would be advantageous.
  • Have relevant experience in a manufacturing operation or in an environment that requires and develops a disciplined work ethic and good technical, automation and hands-on skills ideally, within a distillery.
