We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Production Operator join us at Smiths Detection on site, at our UK Hemel Hempstead location. This position is part of a production team of 60 people, amongst the wider population of 250 employs across other functions, based at the Hemel site

Successful candidate will be responsible for the material processing of materials that are used in our production facility. There will also be at times the opportunity to be involved in mechanical assembly and/or testing of a range of product types as part of a production team which manufactures high quality electronic components and finished products.

We are looking for someone with experience of working in an engineering production environment with strong attention to detail and demonstrable fine manual dexterity. Must work well within a team environment and possess the ability to work independently too.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Processing material components and sub assemblies through our material processing facility using a range of washing and baking techniques.
  • Performing assembly and or testing of sub - assemblies, final assemblies and small / miniature assemblies by following written work instructions, and schematic diagrams, and Production testing procedures
  • Checking quality of own work produced in accordance with Smiths Detection quality standards before handing unit off to next production cycle
  • Contributing to troubleshooting and continuous improvement of production tasks and processes
  • Performing relevant tests and other processes as part of the defined production workflow
  • Assisting the production team with other assembly work as required
  • Complying with and promoting all relevant legal requirements & Smiths policies and procedures, including business ethics, data protection and health & safety
The Individual

Knowledge/skills:

Essential:
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrable fine manual dexterity.
  • Aptitude for mechanical work, including understanding and following written production process documents, drawings and other associated production documents.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including a flexible approach to performing all types of assembly work based on customer demand.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • For a testing role, be able to perform diagnostics on tested equipment and be able to provide appropriate solutions for resolution.
Desirable:
  • Demonstrable proficiency in soldering, wire crimping and use of tools such as screwdrivers, multimeters and power screwdrivers.
  • Diagnostics ability to problem solve effectively.
Experience:

Essential:
  • 2 years + experience of working in an engineering production environment.
  • Experience of working with a range of manual tools e.g. wire strippers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, crimping tools and power screwdrivers, and of working from production process documents, drawings and other associated production documents.
  • And if required for a testing role experience of ATE and bespoke test equipment.
Desirable: Experience of working in a lean manufacturing environment.

Education:

Essential: Good standard of general education. Good, strong communication skills

Desirable: Relevant technical qualification / certification
