Portsmouth Water are seeking a Senior Mechanical & Electrical (M+E) Technician to join our team, playing a key role in maintaining and improving our water treatment works and network distribution assets.
You will support the Production Technical Team Leader by delivering technical training, carrying out quality assurance checks, and offering expert advice and guidance to the wider team.
This role involves reviewing work standards, providing constructive feedback to the Production leadership team, and helping to implement changes that enhance operational efficiency. It's a hands-on, collaborative position that ensures our technical production area continues to operate reliably and effectively.
What will you be doing?
Key Responsibilities
Respond to process alarms triggered via telemetry, identifying and resolving issues remotely or on-site, or escalating where necessary.
Diagnose and repair breakdowns across a wide range of plant equipment, assessing faults and taking appropriate corrective action.
Investigate plant failures and coordinate or carry out prompt, efficient repairs to minimise operational disruptions, including collaborating with others to resolve complex faults.
Monitor external activities near operational sites that may impact the integrity of water sources
Perform routine maintenance on production assets to ensure reliability and compliance
Act as an escalation point for plant and equipment defects, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions
Initiate and oversee service contract work, verifying the scope and quality of completed tasks
Support effective material usage and demonstrate awareness of budgetary considerations
Collaborate with Investment and Non-Infrastructure teams to ensure successful delivery of capital projects
Provide training, coaching, and mentoring to technicians and apprentices, ensuring high standards of safety, quality, and compliance with procedures, while offering input on non-routine activities and technical changes.
What do you need?
Skills, Qualifications & Competencies
Essential
Proven experience and a practical understanding of water treatment processes or water industry exposure
A recognised apprenticeship in a relevant field
A to C grade, or Level 4 or above in GCSE Maths, English and a Science based subject
Knowledge of Chemical Handling and basic hydraulic principles
Experience of working with Human Machine Interface (HMI)/touchscreen devices
Full UK driving licence (you will be required to undertake a driving assessment)
Adaptable with good attention to detail
Accountable for own actions with a willingness to collaborate with others, whilst developing and sharing knowledge, ideas, and best practice with others.
Empathetic, self-aware, and comfortable with constructively challenging areas that could be improved
Systems based skills, open to learning new technology
Passionate about providing excellent service, to our customers, colleagues, and across teams in the wider water industry
Desirable
Industry water operations related qualification, for example, CABWI Level 2 or 3 in Water Treatment, and/or some form of relevant level 3 qualification in electrical engineering or equivalent
Supervisory qualification at level 3, and/or previous leadership experience and willingness to undertake relevant training to upskill in this area
