Job overview




This role provides strategic leadership and oversight of the Trust's use of Restrictive Interventions. Involving formation and delivery of strategies to reduce the incidence of interventions and if applied, completed meeting safety and quality standards.


Main duties of the job




Lead on the implementation and review of the Trust programme that supports the reduction of restrictive interventions and application of safe practice that meets best practice and regulatory guidancec

Lead and implement governance structures to provide assurance of the implementation and monitoring of the strategy. This includes the examination, interpretation, and effective use of data related to restrictive practices.

Lead on the development and implementation of a Reducing Restrictive Interventions (RRI) total quality management system.

Utilise quality improvement methodology to lead and coach local improvement programmes linked to Restrictive Practices (i.e., programmes to reduce use, or to meet certain standards).

In conjunction with key stakeholders, responsible for developing policy and practice in line with the principles of reducing restrictive practices and promoting recovery.

Act as the Trust representative at regional and national networks and meetings related to the reduction of restrictive interventions and development and monitoring of national standards.

Provide specialist leadership to wards and clinical colleagues in the area of restrictive interventions. This includes working alongside colleagues in the delivery of care and may involve application of physical interventions, thereby working in uncomfortable and physically cramped positions.



Governance and Assurance





The post-holder works to deliver the following outcomes:


There is a robust and rigorous system of assurance for Restrictive Interventions, in line with a quality management system approach. The postholder will ensure that the agreed framework is implemented, and staff are supported to deliver the improvements and share the learning across the Trust. Quality Management processes support clinical services to identify quality improvement goals, to report progress and meet contractual and legal obligations to ensure compliance with regulation and statute. Service users and carers are meaningfully involved. The postholder will demonstrate a proven track record of service user and carer engagement, applying co production. Continuously monitor the impact and acceptability of care delivery, questioning established practices and using innovative approaches within agreed parameters. The postholder will maintain a clinical credibility and knowledge of clinical systems and processes that can challenge staff whilst ensuring care delivery remains within accepted standards and guidance. Clinical Service Leaders are supported to apply best practice in Restrictive Interventions and overall use the QI framework to change practice to improve outcomes at a local level. The postholder will be able to plan and evaluate methods and processes for interpreting and presenting data to demonstrate changes within projects. This will include both qualitative and quantitative data. Systems for service improvement are driven by proactive clinical governance initiatives and findings from clinical audit, statutory inspections and locally agreed quality initiatives.

The Professional lead for Restrictive Interventions provides visible operational and strategic leadership in the field of mental health care. Working autonomously at an advanced level, the post holder will:


Provide expert consultancy service in the understanding and use of restrictive interventions including its reporting and recording, ensuring standards meet best practice and national guidance. Provide subject matter expertise and guidance on Trust-wide relevant training topics linked to restrictive interventions and relevant protocols and policies. Provide strategic expertise on the Reducing Restrictive Interventions programme for the Trust. Represent the Trust as the lead with relevant national and regional working parties as required and with colleagues within the PMA and education teams. Be a role model for learning and development in own approach to work and career. The role is a strategic leadership role and has no direct staff reports. The role has budget responsibility where delegated within the Quality team.
