The Vacancy

6-month Fixed Term Contract

Location: Northampton, and fieldwork sites as necessary

MOLA require a Project Assistant to join our geophysical survey team in Northampton. This is an entry-level role, open to candidates with prior experience of archaeology or geophysics and also to those who lack relevant experience but can demonstrate the right aptitude and enthusiasm.

Geophysical survey entails the use of electronic instruments to map buried archaeological remains and is usually carried out to assess sites ahead of excavation.

The project assistant's role will be mostly field-based, working under supervision to collect data with magnetometer carts and other survey instruments. Candidates must have a good level of fitness and stamina and be happy working outdoors, on rural sites, in all weathers. There will also be some office-based work, including processing data, cleaning equipment, and running errands between premises.

The geophysics team works across southern and central England and many of our sites are beyond easy commuting distance of Northampton. The successful candidate will therefore be expected to undertake frequent 'away work', for which overnight accommodation and a subsistence allowance will be provided.

The ideal candidate would be interested in archaeology and enjoy outdoor work. They should be intelligent, numerate and computer literate, with a good spatial awareness, and should be happy working as part of a small team. Possession of a full, clean driving licence is an essential requirement of the role.

Because most of our surveys involve the use of highly sensitive magnetic instruments, the role is likely to be unsuitable for those with medical implants (eg steel pins, pacemakers, etc) which could be a source of magnetic interference. MOLA would be happy to discuss this issue in more detail with any prospective candidate who may be affected.

The vacancy is being advertised as a

six-month fixed-term contra

ct in the first instance, but we hope to offer a contract extension if workload permits.

We are looking for people with:

An interest in archaeology and / or geophysics (prior experience not essential) An aptitude for physical work outdoors in all weathers Relevant transferrable skills (eg computer skills, map reading, experience of working on farmland) A full, clean driving licence Intelligence, and a willingness to learn
