Purpose

Working on vehicle-based military tests alongside the customer within a small-dedicated team of engineers and technicians to coordinate vehicle test activities. Day to day project management of customer programmes that cover the breadth of UTAC Millbrook testing disciplines from powertrain through climatic & component to full vehicle dynamic tests which include product qualification, involving liaison with approval authorities or end users.

The Project Engineer will work with the customer, other Engineers and Business Development to devise bespoke technical solutions to meet customer needs. The project engineer will provide technical support to technicians and customer and be involved in the whole process, from the price compilation, work planning, procedure/legislation research, issue of test instructions and data collection requirements, presentation of results and reporting and provide information for invoicing.

Responsibilities

  • Working within a team of engineers and technicians to co-ordinate and supervise test activity, creating and updating project timing plans to ensure deadlines are met for various activities.
  • Liaison with the customer (Industry), MoD and other stakeholders to meet their specific requirements for day-to-day activities.
  • Liaison with UTAC Millbrook Departments and onsite facilities used by customer i.e. Workshops, Offices, and Tracks etc.
  • Liaison with off-site test facilities to plan and organise time and resources to fulfil the requirements of each test program to maintain and develop test schedules.
  • Undertaking vehicle appraisals and trials.
  • Fully understand the customer requirements of test programs and communicate the requirements clearly to other staff.
  • Develop/specify and continuously improve existing processes, procedures, equipment or facilities.
  • Provide off-site testing support when required
  • Specify data capture needs in order to meet customer requirements.
  • Operation of data acquisition systems.
  • Assist with operational and financial responsibilities as required.
  • Develop test scenarios with customer and other departments.
  • Make engineering judgements regarding the performance of the customer test vehicles and quality of test data.
  • Write test reports, report results and conclusions customers and support them in investigation work to resolve any questions
  • Review and provide authorisation of results and test reports.
  • Develop safety cases and prepare risk assessments
  • Conduct analysis, validate data, and lead investigations into sources of errors, resolve technical issues.
  • Work with customer/approval authorities testing including participation in worst-case discussions.
  • Develop test capabilities within the military vehicle subject area.
  • Help to develop and support other team members
  • Act in accordance with the behaviours for UTAC staff at all times
Qualifications

Qualifications
  • Hold a full UK driving licence (HGV or PSV advantageous)
  • Computer literate with Microsoft Office applications
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in relevant Engineering disciplines
  • Chartered engineer status or working towards (preferred)
Experience
  • Vehicle or trials testing (essential)
  • General data acquisition understanding and ability (essential)
  • Knowledge of sensor types and applications (essential)
  • Knowledge of electronics and circuitry (essential)
  • Knowledge of vehicle mechanical systems (essential)
  • Comparative vehicle assessment and benchmarking (desirable)
  • Knowledge of standards and regulations required to support vehicle approval process (desirable)
  • Project management of Ministry of Defence vehicle system requirement and compliance programmes (beneficial)
  • Experience writing system requirements for vehicles (beneficial)
  • Understanding of military projects (beneficial)
Skills
  • Good communications skills both oral and written.
  • Ability to interaction with UTAC Millbrook and customer staff at all levels of the business
  • Sound engineering background
  • Good PC skills
  • Confident when dealing with customers: face to face, Teams, and on the phone.

  • Full UK driving licence & own transport (UTAC Millbrook is not easily assessable via public transport)
  • SC clearance or ability to achieve this (UK national with residency in the UK for the last 5 years)
  • Willing to undergo a Criminal Disclosure check
  • NOTE: This position be will based on site but will require periods of working off site
