We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated
Project Manager (Research and Impact Services Officer - RISO)
to join our team at Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML). In this role, you'll help coordinate and deliver groundbreaking marine and environmental research projects, working closely with world-class scientists and stakeholders to ensure impactful, high-quality project outcomes.
RISOs work independently across a diverse range of projects, managing their own time and workload to meet various deadlines and requirements. As a RISO, you'll act as a key link between scientists, funders, and stakeholders--ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and contribute meaningfully to real-world research impact.
By joining the
Integrated Research, Impact and Support Services (IRISS)
group at PML, you'll become part of a small, collaborative, and agile team that plays a vital role in supporting and enabling cutting-edge research. You'll coordinate internal and external meetings, engage with project partners, and provide hands-on support to scientists.
A scientific background is desirable but not essential. More important is proven project management experience, along with excellent communication and organisational skills.
Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is a dynamic, innovative, and independent centre of excellence providing research and advice on coastal and ocean science, both globally and locally. As a registered charity and NERC Collaborative Centre, PML has been at the forefront of the UK's strategic marine science capability for over 30 years, collaborating with universities and research institutes across the UK and around the world.
Key Deliverables
Project manage research projects that PML are the lead partner or co-partner of, including monitoring the implementation of the projects' activities and ensuring the delivery of their results.
Contribute to the generation and monitoring of research impact
Contribute to IRISS by affording effective communication and knowledge sharing across the group and inputting to strategy and process design
Provide support to the Research and Impact Services Manager in general duties as requested to ensure the successful and consistent delivery of projects.
Provide support to the Head of Group in the delivery of the PML Impact Plan.
Monitor project progress including schedule, budget and work plan to ensure that deadlines and reporting requirements are met.
Ensure milestones are met by those responsible and deliverables /reports are quality checked and delivered on time.
Support the generation and monitoring of research impact and the pathway to it including collating evidence.
Act as the interface between the funder, project Steering Committees, project partner organisations, third parties and scientific management teams disseminating information as and when necessary.
Actively communicate and liaise with project partners and stakeholders to build effective networks and communication channels.
Write reports and record meeting minutes;
Check and monitor budget expenditure both at project and partner organisations' level, including supporting partners to submit suitable financial records.
Lead the organisation of external events, including with high-level stakeholders, and project meetings.
Support Principal Investigators and maintain project documentation.
Develop and maintain contact databases ensuring adherence to GDPR
Work closely with internal groups in PML including different Science Areas as well as Communications, Finance and Contracts teams.
Support the generation and evidencing of PML impact, contributing to REF case studies and other award nominations.
Contribute to internal forums and focus areas with the aim of maximising PML impact in key challenge areas. This includes the planning of impact pathways
Developing innovative approaches to stakeholder & policy mapping
Develop & oversee the strategic method for maximising and tracking impact via government inquiry responses and consultations across the organisation
Skills Specification
Proven project management experience
Experience of writing/co-writing project reports
Excellent organisational skills with the capacity to multitask, to deliver on allocated tasks and to meet deadlines in pressurised situations
Experience of supporting proposal preparation
Experience of working with key funders such as ESA, Horizon EU and UKRI
Flexible in approach, specifically the ability to manage several concurrent projects, recognise and respond to shifting priorities, and handle different types of information (e.g. scientific, financial, and legal)
Proven skills to manage and work to budgets
Experience organizing conferences / events / large meetings
A proactive approach, high level of initiative and a willingness to drive projects forwards by encouraging others but also to seek help from others when required
Experience of working with overseas partners
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Experience of research impact approaches (generation and monitoring)
Willingness to travel (considering COVID restrictions at the time)
Experience of working with and drawing together diverse stakeholder groups
