The Quality & HSE Manager is responsible for ensuring that all processes, products, and systems meet customer, company, and regulatory quality standards. This role drives continuous improvement initiatives, fosters a culture of quality ownership across all departments, and ensures the effective functioning of the Quality Management System (QMS) in line with ISO and customer specific requirements.
Responsibilities
1. Quality Strategy & Leadership
Develop and implement a site-wide quality strategy aligned with business and customer objectives.
Act as the key quality advocate across departments, championing a "Right First Time" culture.
Partner with Production, Engineering & Supply Chain teams to integrate quality into every stage of the manufacturing process.
Lead cross-functional problem-solving and improvement initiatives.
2. Quality Management System (QMS)
Maintain and continuously improve the QMS in line with ISO 9001 (and other relevant standards such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
Ensure procedures, work instructions, and records are current, accurate, and compliant.
Plan and lead internal audits; co-ordinate external and customer audits to ensure successful outcomes.
Manage document control and ensure quality documentation integrity.
Lead and coordinate QMS development and transition activities (e.g. system upgrades, process migration from legacy tools, user training and adoption).
3. Process & Product Quality
Monitor and analyse process capability and product conformance through key metrics:
Internal failure rates (components, test)* Scrap & stock write-off* Supplier return rates (RMAs, RSNs)* Customer return rates and complaints (CRNs)* Own and drive the FRACAS (Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System) for internal and external failures, ensuring robust capture, analysis, corrective actions and verification of effectiveness.
Lead root cause investigations using structured problem-solving tools (8D, 5 Whys).
Drive implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to prevent recurrence of issues.
Collaborate with Engineering to validate new products, equipment, and process changes (Product Group meetings, Engineering Gate reviews).
4. Supplier & Customer Quality
Manage supplier quality performance through audits, scorecards, and improvement plans.
Oversee supplier return processes (RMAs, RSNs), ensuring issues with supplied materials are logged in QMS, investigated through FRACAS and closed with effective CAPA.
Ensure effective incoming inspection and control of supplied materials.
Oversee customer returns and complaint processes (CRNs), ensuring prompt containment, communication and resolution.
Track and analyse customer complaints / returns, proactively driving preventive actions into product and process improvements.
5. HSE (ISO 14001 & ISO 45001)
Maintain and improve Environmental and OH&S management systems.
Co-ordinate risk assessments, safe systems of work and training.
Record, investigate and report incidents/near misses; drive corrective/preventive actions.
Prepare for and host external HSE audits/inspections.
6. Leadership & Team Development
Lead on quality matters in collaboration with Production, Engineering, Supply Chain and Service.
Coach teams in standard work and structured problem solving (8D, 5-Whys) and verify CAPA effectiveness.
Establish clear accountability for issues and improvements (owners, due dates, verification criteria).
Prioritise improvement work with the Operations Manager; escalate risks with clear data and options.
Design and deliver concise, practical training (inspection methods, defect tagging, control plans, document control).
7. Continuous Improvement
Promote Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to reduce waste, improve yield, and enhance product quality.
Support Kaizen events and training to build problem-solving capability across departments.
Identify and lead cost of quality (CoQ) reduction projects without compromising standards.
Build/maintain reliable dashboards and trend views for Quality & HSE; feed Management Reviews.
Co-ordinate Quality, Environmental and H&S data gathering to support Group CSR / ESG reporting (e.g. incidents, waste, returns, scope 1, 2, & 3 emissions).
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Reduction in internal and external defects (PPM / NCRs)
Improved first-pass yield and reduced rework/scrap
Audit compliance scores (internal, customer, third-party)
Ontime closure of CAPAs and audit findings
Customer satisfaction and complaint resolution time
HSE incident frequency/severity.
Requirements
- Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, or a related field.
- Experience: 5 years in quality/HSE roles within manufacturing, including ownership of QMS processes.
- Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001 (and familiarity with ISO 14001/45001).
- Demonstrated experience with Lean, Six Sigma, and structured problem-solving tools.
- Proficiency in data analysis and quality software/tools (e.g., Minitab, SPC systems).
- Industry context: Electronics manufacturing (PCB assembly/test) highly desirable.
Systems & Tools
- ERP: SAP Business One (or equivalent ERP) - must be comfortable navigating BOMs, routings, lots/serials, traceability.
- QMS/DMS: Q-Pulse (or equivalent QMS) for document control, audits, CAPA, training records.
- Office & Analytics: Excel (must-have); Power Query, SQL and Power BI desirable for analytics and dashboards.
- Desirable: basic Power Automate/workflow familiarity for approvals/alerts.
