Summary
The Quantity Surveyor (QS) plays a pivotal role in managing the financial and contractual aspects of construction projects. From initial cost planning to final account settlement, the QS ensures value for money while maintaining quality and compliance across all phases of delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
Cost Estimation & Budgeting: Prepare detailed cost plans, estimates, and tender documents for construction projects.
Contract Management: Draft, review, and administer contracts, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
Stakeholder Liaison: Collaborate with clients, contractors, suppliers, and consultants to ensure smooth project execution.
Measurement & Valuation: Conduct site measurements and valuations to assess progress and manage interim payments.
Risk & Value Management: Identify cost-saving opportunities and mitigate financial risks throughout the project lifecycle.
Final Accounts: Prepare and agree final accounts with contractors and clients, ensuring accurate reconciliation.
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
Degree in Quantity Surveying or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and legal frameworks
Proficiency in cost management software (e.g. CostX, CATO, Bluebeam)
Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills
Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Desirable Attributes:
Membership of RICS or working towards chartership
Experience in sustainability-driven procurement and lifecycle costing
Familiarity with NEC, JCT, or FIDIC contract forms
