About this role:
This is an exciting opportunity to join an expanding business built on quality and integrity where you can really make a difference. The new QS/Estimator role is an important role and will be part of the Boreholes and Ground Source Heat Pump Business Development and Technical team providing the right candidate the opportunity to develop their skills and grow with the company. Working for the Technical Directors and the Managing Director this role is key to ensuring our projects and variations are priced accurately and project scope and profitability is clearly documented and planned up front.
This will be a detail orientated role for a candidate with a minimum of five years' experience of estimating within the Mechanical and Electrical industry. Having the ability to maintain financial records in line with the required project scope, at all times, is essential. Good record keeping and timely accurate communication is essential. A strong working knowledge of construction contracts, particularly JCT and NEC, and relevant industry qualifications are ideal.
Coaching and professional development will be provided by the Technical Directors on the job, and where appropriate external training maybe offered in line with business needs.
The role requires a motivated and proactive individual who can understand what is involved to design and install a new system and price an estimate for Customers. Depending on the size of the project this will include all project costs and timelines in accordance with the Boreholes business capabilities. A successful candidate will need to be able to multitask and be a completer finisher, ensuring all project, contract and financial aspects of a project can be tracked and managed accurately by the project manager once accepted by the Client.
Oversee all variations, document and present to the Project Manager to gain the Clients approval and action. A successful candidate will aim to exceed customer expectations, have and eye for detail and the approach or experience to identify the best way to deliver a project.
Good organisational and communication skills are essential, and they must be able to multitask in a busy team based environment.
Role and responsibilities include:
Learn and live the Nicholls culture and the quality standards it expects
Work closely with the Technical Directors and MD who will provide direction and oversight
Working with the Technical Directors to interpret clients requirements and prepare accurate cost estimates for tender submissions
Have the ability estimate what is required to deliver a profitable project and create a detailed cost plan and bill of quantities for the project manager
Once accepted by the Client, arrange project estimate handover meeting with appointed Project Manager
Support budget development and cost tracking to ensure projects remain financially on target, particularly in relation to procurement decisions and timelines
Evaluate and price variations requested by the Client or Project manager
Work closely the relevant Project Manager to answer any queries that may occur relating to the Estimate provided
Working with the Project Manager and Project Finance, review estimates vs. actuals/forecasts to assess commercial success. Use this information to ensure all future projects are priced accurately; share learnings with the team
Occasionally you may be required to visits a large project to review works vs. cost plan
Take pride in all you do - projects, people and the customer experience
Ensure compliance with contractual and regulatory rules and guidance
Negotiate and manage subcontractor agreements, including scope, pricing, and contractual terms, ensuring alignment with project budgets and timelines

Quantity Surveying / Estimator: minimum of 5 years (required)
Degree in Quantity Surveying, RICS/CIOB membership desirable
