Job Description

To take responsibility for the Radiology Assistant team countywide, managing daily rosters and staffing; ensuring safe and appropriate staffing to all modalities. Liaising with the Senior Management Team and Modality leads to resolve day to day issues associated with the Radiology Assistant team. To work clinically in the Radiology department maintaining current clinical skills To liaise with Senior Management team, Radiographers; Imaging Nursing staff; Radiologists, Clinicians and Nurses within the Group in order to promote an efficient Radiographic service which places the needs of the patient at the centre of all our activities. Using effective people management to resolve any day to day issues associated with the Radiology Assistant team.



To promote good working relationships between all staff within the Radiology team. To set objectives and review performance of the Radiology Assistant team through the current PDR system. Support ongoing Mandatory Training compliance for all Radiology Assistants. Create and maintain the Radiology Assistant Eroster, reflecting the levels of service required in the Imaging department by the Radiology Assistants.



To include populating the weekly and daily rotas. Support with the recruitment and retention within the Radiology Assistant team. Support with the investigation of any incidents / complaints related to the Radiology Assistants. Ensure competency standards and training plans are in place for Radiology Assistants and maintain their compliance.



To assist with the production of SOPs CommunicationProvide and receive routine information requiring discretion, sensitivity or persuasive skills. Overcome barriers to understanding, e.g. patient has physical impairment, mental health condition, learning disabilities or communication difficulties. Implement alternative methods of communication where required to ensure that patient safety is maintained.



To provide and communicate any required after care requirements following procedures. Communicate any concerns/issues etc in timely and professional manner. Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients, carers, visitors and members of the multi-disciplinary team. To be able to relate to all manner of patients with understanding and care, respecting their privacy and dignity to provide a caring and confidential service.



Appropriate communication with individuals involved in the care of patients. Respond appropriately to queries, take phone messages and pass on precise written and verbal information to patients/colleagues where appropriate. To ensure effective communication with RDA's across county, holding regular meetings sharing updates from departmental and Trust Attend Radiology Directorate and Governance meetings as required Maintain up to date clinical competence to the highest professional standards. Develop and maintain a good knowledge of Radiology exams/procedures and associated requirements i.e preparation, during the exam and any required aftercare to ensure a safe delivery of practice/service.



To be responsible for own workflow when working within a designated area, ensuring that clinical requests are acted upon as appropriate and that a good throughput of patient examinations is achieved Demonstrate compassion through effective relationships based on empathy, respect and dignity. To ensure the smooth running of the various departments on a daily basis as required either by managing Radiology Assistant staffing or in a clinical capacity as required. Develop own competence to deliver effective care and treatments through improving clinical/technical knowledge / skill, and expertise. Support colleagues and senior staff to help promote good team morale, leading by example with ones own professional behaviour.



To Ensure that radiation safety measures are being observed within the limits of the procedure being carried out and that their own standard of Radiation Protection is in accordance with the "Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017", IR(ME)R 2017 and any other relevant legislation. To be aware of the potential hazards of strong magnetic fields if working in MRI. Assisting with moving and handling of those patients who are immobile in a manner that is safe for all concerned and following the Trust manual handling policy. Perform venous cannulation as required within their role.



Prepare trolleys and conduct aseptic technique whilst assisting with interventional/biopsy procedures as required within their role To assess routine requests for imaging so that patient position and selection of appropriate table equipment is used to optimise image quality of the body part under examination. To physically position the patient for a range of routine examinations, to ensure that image quality, patient comfort and patient safety are maintained at all times whilst taking into account patient limitations. When working in MRI, be sensitive to patient anxiety regarding the claustrophobic nature of the MRI scanner and to be able to help patients overcome their anxiety so that the examination can be performed. Liaise with other departments/wards within and outside WAHT to Monitor stock, operate stock control and order medical equipment, accessories, consumables, linen as required via the appropriate pathway Have a flexible attitude towards the hours of work and participate in work and duties as required within the directorate.



Participate in the development and promotion of a positive learning environment, which meets the needs of all learners within the department environment. Undertake and participate in personal development reviews and work to achieve personal objectives/competencies. To participate in personal development needs that may be identified by the service leads or in the appraisal process in an agreed timeframe. Ensure training plans are in place and monitored for all Radiology Assistants.



Ensure clinical competencies for all Radiology Assistants are completed with up to date record keeping. Adhere to the trust policies in relation to Manual Handling. Ensure all Radiology Assistants are compliant. Understanding of the basic operation of the specialised radiology equipment following appropriate training; to include, but not exclusive of, changing of ultrasound probes, simple in and out/up and down movement of the CT and MRI scanners, accessing worklists in order to register patients exams on the modality within clinical role Report any identified faults or concerns to maintain service provision via appropriate reporting systems.



Ensure compliance with all Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures understanding your role in the prevention of infection in patients and staff. Wear personal protective equipment when required. Maintaining high standards of cleanliness in examination rooms to minimise spread of infection and record in line with departmental requirements. Removing patient cannulas post procedures in line with Trust policy.



Undertake hand hygiene audits. Report any incidents on the Trust risk management system and participate in any requirements for incident investigations To ensure you are aware of your responsibilities, supporting policies and undertake the appropriate level of training for your role. Basic fault finding, reporting and documenting faults as per trust requirements. Maintain professional boundaries and working relationships with patients and colleagues.



Be aware and compliant with the principles of safeguarding adults and children and how to respond to suspected abuse. To keep accurate and timely records of own work and that of other members of the radiology team. To be responsible for own mandatory training and ensure it is up to date as per trust requirements. To ensure you remain up to date with department requirements/changes by attending departmental meetings when required, reading meeting minutes and monthly governance updates.



Act as an advocate for safeguarding patients; demonstrate courage to speak up when there are concerns about care. Demonstrate commitment to improving care and the patient experience to include participation in Quality Improvement Programmes. Deliver a high standard of care in accordance with WAHT policies and procedures. Finance, Information and Resources: To adhere to and ensure the effective use of resources.



To maintain appropriate stock levels and ordering additional supplies as required. Health and safetyMaintain knowledge of Health and Safety at Work Act, ensuring appropriate measures are taken in respect of Health and Safety for patients, relatives, visitors, hospital staff and contractors. To work at all times in a safe and responsible manner, ensuring own work practices comply with Trust and Directorate Policies on Health and Safety, Infection prevention and control ,COSSH, Security and Radiation Protection, and that any hazards are brought to the attention of the Radiographer in Charge. To ensure that you have read, understood and signed local safety procedures i.e Radiation safety policy, IRMER procedures etc.



Ensuring that all apparatus and equipment, that you are competent to use, is working satisfactorily and that any malfunction is reported in line with local requirements. To work in accordance with all Trust and Clinical Imaging policies. Be aware and able to recognise emergency situations, initiate basic life support and summon the crash team when necessary. Be responsible for the appropriate health, safety and welfare matters affecting themselves, patients, visitors, professional and non-professional authorised staff within a designated, controlled or supervised area within the Diagnostic Imaging Department or the Trust.



Assist patients in completing any safety forms required as part of their examination.
