Role Purpose
This is a 13-month student placement within the R&D Chemistry team at Arxada's Blackley site in Manchester. The role is laboratory-based and supports active innovation projects within Hygiene, Home & Personal Care.
You will contribute to formulation development, performance evaluation, analytical testing, and characterization of disinfectant and preservation technologies, gaining hands-on experience in an industrial R&D environment. Working under the guidance of experienced scientists, you will support both short-term business deliverables and longer-term innovation activities.
This placement is ideal for an enthusiastic undergraduate with a strong interest in physical, organic, analytical, or formulation chemistry.
Key ResponsibilitiesPerform laboratory-based performance evaluation, product characterization, and development testing to support R&D programs in Hygiene, Home & Personal Care Support or lead formulation development and test method development, refining protocols and improving testing methodologies Generate and evaluate prototype formulations for analytical testing, performance testing, and non-biocidal claims assessment Apply a range of physico-chemical and analytical techniques, including surface tension measurements, HPLC/GC, UV-Vis spectroscopy, titration, and particle size analysis Investigate fundamental interactions between formulation ingredients, substrates, and testing methodologies, interpreting experimental data to inform next steps Maintain accurate laboratory records, prepare monthly reports, and deliver a final technical summary of work completed Participate in team meetings, technical discussions, and stakeholder presentations, presenting findings clearly to both scientific and non-scientific audiences Actively contribute to site and departmental safety initiatives, supporting best practices and continuous improvement in laboratory safety Gain exposure to the broader industrial R&D organization, collaborating with scientists and cross-functional partners across Arxada

Education & ExperienceCurrently studying toward a BSc or MSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Cosmetic Science, or Formulation Science Strong academic background in physical sciences, particularly chemistry Prior experience in a chemistry laboratory environment through academic work or internships Demonstrated curiosity, versatility, and willingness to learn

Knowledge & SkillsFoundation in physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and/or formulation science Ability to analyze experimental data, draw conclusions, and propose next steps Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and timely delivery Clear written and verbal communication skills Confidence to present technical work to diverse audiences Collaborative mindset and positive approach to learning in a team-based environment
