The Role



As an R&D Tax Assistant Manager, you will be a part of the wider R&D Tax Reliefs team at Azets. You will lead the preparation of R&D tax claims, ensuring compliance with UK tax regulations and maintaining client relationships. Your role ensures high-quality service delivery and ambitious growth and client satisfaction.

Core Skills

Claim Delivery




Lead and prepare the full end-to-end process for R&D claims. Readily gather technical and financial information from clients in calls, including leading project qualification, technical narrative, cost analysis, and apportionment calls with minimal support. Prepare complex draft calculations, including s1308 and ERIS. Understanding of risk areas and scheme criteria, including risk mitigation procedures, for basic claims. Signpost risk areas to reviewer and propose basic risk mitigations.

Report Preparation





Prepare technical narratives in line with the DSIT guidelines and Azets processes, creating a persuasive argument for R&D across a range of disciplines. Prepare a professional report which sufficiently describes the R&D claim and mitigates risk. Takes pride in own work and takes personal responsibility for ensuring that the final product is accurate or high quality, and presented well. Delivers work within agreed scope and timescales, meeting deadlines efficiently. Communicates when scope or timescales need to change.


Key accountabilities

Portfolio Management





Takes full responsibility for own clients and resource planning in relation to their client portfolio. Ensure assignments are diarised and delivered in line with client expectations and statutory deadlines. Help to establish and maintain strong client relations. Holds clients to account on the quality and timeliness of agreed deliverables. Identify variations to initial engagement scope at an early stage of an assignment and propose approach and ad-hoc fees for any additional work for director/partner approval, so that full value can be recognised. Review work in progress (WIP) under own control and consider stage of completion and work undertaken.

Excellent problem-solving skills and critical thinking to assist our clients in applying complex legislation to real life situations. Ability to swiftly adapt to and learn about different industry sectors. Strong attention to detail and first time accuracy, and strong financial skills. Technical Skills

Technical & Legislation




Very good understanding of the legislation, CIRD, and HMRC guidance, and can draw on this to enlighten colleagues and clients in specific and relevant areas. Keep abreast of changes to tax legislation and wider narrative, including tribunals, and consider how changes might affect clients or future R&D claims. Be able to communicate and advise how potential projects/ costs may be perceived by HMRC in borderline R&D cases, and craft legislative arguments.


Qualifications



A recognised university degree in a field of Science or Engineering, preferably Computer Science, or Mechanical or Civil Engineering. Preferably, a tax qualification such as an ATT and/or completion of an R&D tax training course.


Essential Experience



Experience working in R&D tax advisory at a well-respected accountancy practice or consultancy firm. Ideally, work experience in the chosen industry or sector as an engineer, scientist, or in a technical role, with a good sector knowledge.
