We are currently looking for a R&D Tax Manager to join our Solent office. This is a key position within the R&D Tax team and would suit someone that wants to bring in ideas and help shape the direction of the department.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Management of a portfolio of R&D clients and claims including proactive advice, commercially appropriate tax planning, developing new business opportunities and contributing to the management and development of the Innovation and R&D team

This is a key role within the Business R&D tax team and the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering tax advisory services across a diverse mix of owner managed companies as well as some large and international groups operating across a variety of industries.

The day-to-day work will include:
  • Preparation and review of R&D claims/reports for submission to HMRC
  • Identification of potential R&D claims and associated discussions with clients and prospects.
  • Communicate directly with clients on the phone or in person where appropriate to resolve queries and develop relationships
  • Provide technical advice and support to colleagues in relation to innovation incentives and tax planning for innovative companies
  • Provide support to partners and relationship managers on relevant client matters or opportunities
  • Ensure planning and cross-selling opportunities are identified and followed up.
  • Increase the client base through an organised approach to business development e.g., networking, client recommendation requests, and developing referrer base
  • Coach and train junior staff and trainees in developing their technical, client relationship and business development skills.
  • Ensure the Firm\xe2\x80\x99s technical, ethical and compliance procedures are adhered to in all cases
  • Leading tax reorganisation projects \xe2\x80\x93 such as capital reduction and s110 demergers, to separate out different businesses and shareholders.
  • Working closely with corporate finance on projects such as acquisitions/disposals and succession planning
  • Advise on structuring relevant to the EIS/SEIS scheme and managing the assurance process;
  • Advise on the tax elements of equity incentivisation, such as the EMI option scheme
  • Broad knowledge of other tax areas which are dealt with by other specialist teams, such as VAT and R&D.
  • Proactively involved in networking, proposals and growing the corporate tax portfolio in London
  • Reviewing complex tax returns where required, or advising on specific technical matters in tax computations
  • Identifying opportunities for tax planning, risk mitigation and cross-selling between service lines to ensure clients receive a proactive and effective service.
  • Assisting with any other ad hoc projects and duties as may reasonably be required.
  • Training and mentoring junior colleagues within the Business Tax Team
  • Ensuring the Firm\xe2\x80\x99s technical, ethical, risk and compliance procedures are adhered to in all cases.
  • Considering international tax aspects and coordinating advice from international advisors where required
The Person:

The successful candidate will be expected to act largely autonomously, subject to support and oversight, as required, by the office\xe2\x80\x99s tax partners.

Relationship management will be a key aspect of the role and the candidate will be expected to contribute to effective team working as part of the management team, responsible for coordinating directly with clients, collaborating effectively with colleagues as well coaching, managing, mentoring, and appraising junior team members.

The tax profession is subject to constant change and evolution and finding new and better ways to work, adapting to accommodate and embrace technological development is essential. In addition to client facing responsibilities, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in internal initiatives to drive positive change and contribute to the advancement of the firm\xe2\x80\x99s business and corporation tax strategy, processes and marketing initiatives.
  • Self-starter capable of motivating, driving and developing the team
  • CTA or ACA qualified (will accept qualified by experience in industry)
  • Excellent knowledge of R&D tax legislation and rules
  • Effective communication skills at all levels and inter-personal skills in dealing with clients in person
  • Ability to explain and simplify highly technical point for clients to understand and report writing skill in conveying technical points to HMRC.
  • Recognised by clients and internal colleagues as a subject matter expert
  • Collaborates with clients and Menzies\xe2\x80\x99 staff to ensure high quality client service
  • Demonstrates sound judgement, knowing when to refer to more senior experts for guidance and advice
  • Highly organised and structured inspiring confidence in others
  • Actively involved in networking to build external relationships
  • High level of R&D technical expertise and commercial application
  • Experience of preparing and submitting R&D claims/reports is essential
  • Practical experience in R&D tax planning
  • Previous experience of Patent Box claims is desirable
  • Travel between UK offices and to UK client premises may be required
