Waste services are currently trialling a 4-day working week until March 2024. A 4-day week is when full-time staff work one less day per week (4 days instead of 5) but still get paid the same salary. It is all about getting the same amount of work completed and being as productive as possible. It is not the same as compressed hours, which is working the traditional 37-hour week over 4 long days. A 4-day week for a full-time employee at the Council will consist of 32 hours. For part time staff, the number of hours reduced would be calculated via a pro-rata reduction. A helpful way of explaining this arrangement is that staff will need to get 100% of their work done, in 80% of the time, for 100% of their salary. The purpose of this trial is to better support the health and wellbeing of our colleagues, while still delivering an excellent service to our residents.
South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridge City Council have formed a refuse collection shared service and are recruiting for Refuse Loaders to join our team which deliver high-quality, environmentally-sustainable services.
As a Refuse Loader you will be working with a Driver as a team to collect and empty bins into our trucks in a safe and efficient way. We work to high-customer standards, clearing up spilt rubbish and returning bins to the correct places.
Joining hard-working teams with a service satisfaction rate of over 90%, we need people who can bring a professional and friendly attitude. It is essential that you have good customer service skills with a flexible and positive approach.

The contracted hours are 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between 06:00 and 14:00. Although throughout the 4-day week trial the hours are 06:00 to 14:30, if the trial is successful then these hours will stay the same.
As one of our employees you will be entitled to 25 days annual leave and will progress to 30 days after five yearsservice. However, if the trial is a success then this will be brought into line with the new working hours.
Other benefits include a work life balance. All uniform, along with any other PPE required will be provided.
