Brief Description

As the Regional Managing Director, you will collaborate cross industry and be at the forefront of delivering a first-class service to our valued passengers and freight customers. With an operating cost budget of hundreds of millions and an annual capital expenditure portfolio of approximately \xc2\xa31 billion, your leadership will extend to a team of approximately 8,000 staff, guiding them towards operational excellence!

About the role (External)

As a Regional Managing Director, you will provide clear vision and direction through the next stage of change, with a whole industry approach to providing a better service for customers and empower employees within the region to successfully achieve both regional and company-wide objectives using a customer led approach. As a role model in safety and collaboration, you will champion a safety culture and drive improvements. Your key accountabilities will include but not be limited to

  • As a member of Executive Leadership Team provide the overall leadership of the organisation and the region and inspire excellence throughout the business, directing the development and delivery of strategies to meet or exceed the Control Period commitments and Balanced Scorecard objectives set by the sponsors and NR\'s Board
  • Deliver business outcomes by working collaboratively with the Executive Leadership Team portraying strong behaviours that align the organisation together to deliver its vision.
  • Lead the region in working effectively within the wider NR matrix structure, being an intelligent customer of the central functions and provide input to policy, standards and network strategies
  • Improve how NR serves passengers and freight users and deliver the CP7 outcomes we have promised our funders, customers and stakeholders whilst building the agility in the business to respond to industry changes
  • Lead the region executive team to deliver a safe, sustainable, efficient and profitable service for passengers and freight users to enable an effective running of passenger rail services including management and resolution of operational, maintenance, asset management, financial and investment demands placed upon the network to deliver an operational, fit for purpose, rail network across the region.
  • Lead and mange key regional relationships with high profile stakeholders, all customers, stakeholders, media, and the public, fostering a long-term partnership approach to relationships.
  • Direct the newly created operational business units in the running of the day-to-day operation of the railway aligned to train operating companies.
  • Deliver against all franchise commitments, network and shareholder objectives, driving efficiencies and value for money for the ultimate benefit of fare paying passengers
To excel in this role, we require the following essential criteria:
  • Demonstrable previous experience of successfully leading a large, safety-critical, regulated, profit and loss (P&L) business.
  • Extensive change management experience and a proven ability to embed change within an organisation.
  • A passion for delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Extensive executive leadership experience in a 24/7, heavily unionised operational environment.
  • Deep operational, maintenance, and asset management delivery experience.
  • First-class stakeholder management skills across industry, government, passengers, alliance partners, and suppliers.
  • Experience in commercial negotiation and managing a multi-hundred-million-pound profit centre.
  • Experience in directing complex delivery organizations, including project delivery.
  • Rail experience is highly desirable
