Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and compassionate Band 5 Registered Mental Health Nurse to join Oak Ward , a 15-bed male admission ward within the Medium Secure service at the Hellingly Centre. Oak Ward provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for individuals with complex and acute mental health needs, supported by a structured programme of therapeutic and meaningful activity.



As part of a provider collaborative, Oak Ward works within the Secure Recovery Model, delivering evidence-based interventions that promote engagement, stability, and long-term recovery.



We are seeking applications from RMNs with post-registration experience who are committed to delivering safe, effective, and person-centred care in a secure setting. The successful candidate will be a key member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to clinical assessments, care planning, risk management, and therapeutic interventions, while supporting the safe and effective running of the ward.

As a Staff Nurse, you will play a vital role in delivering safe, structured, & therapeutic care for patients with complex mental health needs, often with forensic backgrounds.



Key Responsibilities will include:



Effectively manage the shift & participate in regular meetings to review & monitor patients' care plans. Provide nursing perspectives in MDT meetings, tribunals & CPA reviews. Assess, plan, & deliver high-quality nursing care tailored to patients' needs. Administer medication safely, monitor its effects & manage any side effects. De-escalate challenging behaviours & manage aggression using approved techniques (e.g. PMVA). Support patients in their recovery journey, focusing on rehabilitation & reintegration. Maintain accurate & up-to-date documentation while ensuring confidentiality in line with GDPR and safeguarding policies. Conduct risk assessments and advocate for patients' rights while balancing risk management & public protection. Take on the role of Primary Nurse, reinforcing structured routines, maintaining therapeutic boundaries & ensuring junior staff adhere to best practices. Complete incident reports & participate in post-incident debriefs to enhance learning and service development.

Working Pattern:



You will be required to work flexible shifts, including Long Days (07:00 - 19:30) Nights (19:00 - 07:30) & covering weekends and bank holidays as part of the rota.



Oak ward is a 15 bedded ward that caters for male adults and is part of the forensic pathway. The pathway includes two medium secure male wards, one female medium secure ward and a low secure male ward. We support our service users on their individual pathways through an MDT approach. We are a motivated and responsive team managing an ever-changing environment.



The ward aims to promote recovery and rehabilitation with service users. There is a strong emphasis on service user involvement in their care and treatment as part of the secure recovery model. The successful candidate will be part of the team that actively encourage, and continue to develop practices which will support to facilitate this.
