The post-holder is responsible for direct clinical care for individual patients and groups of patients within their area of work. This includes the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care from admission to discharge. The post holder is expected to take charge of a ward, following an agreed development period and also be responsible for staff and resources in the absence of the ward manager or deputy. The post holder is expected to supervise junior staff and be able to teach qualified and unqualified staff, including pre and post registration students.
The post holder will be required to work in rotation in all ward areas within the division of surgery and anaesthetics for clinical development or service needs. This includes allocation to the admission and discharge facility. The post holder will be required to work shifts throughout the 24hour period.

Ensure that self and other professionals adhere to infection control best and planning and delivering care to patients.
Maintain accurate and clear documentation of all nursing care and communication with the multidisciplinary team.
Communicate with patients and relatives in a sensitive manner, providing information regarding care and progress as required.
Liaise with the multidisciplinary team to ensure clinical care is optimised from admission to discharge.
Facilitate discharge of patients to enable safe, appropriate and timely discharge with suitable ongoing arrangements for care needs.
Communicate effectively with the matron, bed management team and discharge coordinators to optimise use of inpatient beds.
