Job Description

We are looking for motivated Band 5 nursing staff to join our friendly, supportive and progressive Neonatal team in our purpose built 28 cot Neonatal Unit. The 28 cots consist of 12 ITU/HDU and 16 Special Care cots and the service provides care to babies from across the county. A recent addition to our service is the provision of Neonatal Nursing support to our maternity ward through the establishment of a 4 cot Transitional Care facility.



All new staff are offered an 8 week supernumerary induction programme and assigned named mentors. Ongoing, continuous, professional development is an expectation of all Unit staff. This includes enrolment in the Network Foundation Education Programme for applicants who are new to Neonatal Care. Applicants will be expected to undertake the Neonatal Critical Care Course once proficient in the specialty and a Teaching & Assessing qualification when a course place is offered. Funding and study time will be provided.



Additional working pattern details:

Rotation-nights, days, weekends & bank holidays



Applicants who would like to rotate to our Children's unit are also very welcome to apply. We are also happy to support rotations to Maternity services if this would appeal to applicants.



Applicants should be Registered Nurses (Child Branch), Registered Nurses (Adult Branch) or Registered Midwives. Newly qualified nurses/midwives are welcome to apply as full training and induction is offered.



The unit has a collaborative approach to care with good working relationships within the multi-disciplinary team and is lucky to be housed in a modern purpose built Womens Centre with excellent facilities for both staff and families. We practice Family Integrated Care and have special interest groups for Infant Feeding, Safeguarding, Developmental Care and Palliative Care. HOPE and SHED parent support groups are well embedded on the unit.



Opportunities to be involved in Quality Improvement training and projects are available to all staff. Recent projects undertaken by staff have included the introduction of Family Integrated Care and implementing ACE awareness to reduce risk to babies and promote resilience in families.



Job Purpose



Working within the Neonatal Unit multidisciplinary team providing an effective and evidenced based service through assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating high quality nursing care.



Communicating effectively with patients, carers, relatives and all members of the multidisciplinary team



Maintaining and developing high standards of care



Taking on responsibility for personal development and supporting the development and supervision of others by developing and maintaining specialist knowledge of neonatal care.



Conducting oneself in a professional manner and being a role model to less experienced/ non registered and new staff at all times



Patient care



Demonstrate and promote a family integrated style of clinical practice.



Use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care.



Be responsible for the organisation of own workload.



Assist the team in the day to day running of the clinical area.



Communicate with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to aid effective patient care.



Communicate effectively with parents and/or carers potentially complex, sensitive or distressing information.



Maintain clear, accurate and concise patient records in line with departmental and professional standards and include relevant outcome measures.



Maintain infant/family dignity and confidentiality at all times



Professional practice



Ensure clinical practice is evidence based or peer reviewed "best practice".



Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to deliver an evidence based service.



With supervision and assistance take on increased responsibility recognising own limitations and seeking help appropriately.



Develop competency in the use of all relevant Trust IT systems including the use of electronic patient record, email, and PACS.



Maintain regular use of emails to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust



Adhere to the NMC code of practice at all times and operate within the NMC scope of professional practice.



Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of accountability, responsibility and Duty of Care.



Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and ensure patient confidentiality at all times.



Demonstrate compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters.



Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols.



Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and the professionalism of its staff is portrayed.



Education and training



Be actively involved in and support departmental education programmes.



Consolidate and learn new skills and competencies to provide excellence in care. Develop clinical reasoning skills through active participation in training and development. This will include undertaking the Neonatal Qualification in Speciality.



Develop the skills to supervise, mentor, support and educate less experienced and non registered staff in the clinical practice setting.



Undertake all mandatory training.



Improving quality and developing practice



Comply with requirements to register and revalidate as required with the NMC.



Identify own development needs. Proactively develop and improve own practice using all available resources



Openly question and challenge practice in a constructive way so that standards of patient care are continually evaluated and improved .
