This is a full-time permanent role providing essential services that mark key life events for residents of Brighton & Hove. Working in a high-profile public-facing role, the officer ensures legal compliance, data accuracy, and sensitive customer engagement across a range of duties--from registering births and deaths to conducting ceremonies and attesting legal notices. The role requires a balance of technical knowledge, emotional intelligence, and administrative precision.

A person cannot be appointed if they are:



An undischarged bankrupt, or subject to a Debt Relief Order or Restrictions Order. A recent council member (within the last 12 months) of the appointing authority or its relevant committee. Employed by the local authority in burial-related duties (excluding clerks or deputy clerks). Holding religious registration roles, such as:
Authorised person for marriages,

Secretary of a synagogue (for marriages),

Registering officer of the Society of Friends,

Minister of religion.
Medical practitioner, midwife, undertaker, or involved in burial/cremation services. Engaged in life insurance or any business that could conflict with registration duties. Previously dismissed by the Registrar General, unless consent for reappointment is given.
