Regulatory Services Officer Trainee (tobacco And Vapes)

Salford, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

This is an exciting entry level opportunity for someone interested in investigations and consumer protection to join Salford City Council's expanding Regulatory Services team.

The service is made up of regulatory teams including Trading Standards and Licensing, Environmental Health, Environmental Protection and Private Sector Housing.

Did you know that the government is funding the recruitment and training of apprentice Trading Standards Officers to enforce new regulations on cigarettes, tobacco and vapes as well as the full range of trading standards duties?

The Trading Standards and Licensing team enforce regulations and is also responsible for promoting business compliance, consumer protection and public safety across a wide range of workstreams including metrology, food and feed standards, animal health, fair trading, product safety and licensing for gambling, scrap metal, taxi and private hire services, and regulated activity at premises and events.

Trading Standards already enforces strict rules on tobacco and vapes and it's about to get even more serious! Last year, across the country, Trading Standards seized more than a million illegal vapes, 20 million counterfeit cigarettes and 7,183kg of illicit hand rolling tobacco. New rules are about to be implemented and this role will be crucial in helping us to ensure compliance in Salford.

You will be an apprentice embedded within the Trading Standards and Licensing team. The role will include assisting with the review and inputting of complaints and intelligence, undertaking compliance checks, assisting with the seizure of non-compliant goods, issuing advice to businesses, taking statements, interviewing traders, and undertaking criminal investigations. The successful candidate will be provided management and mentoring support but will be responsible for managing their own caseload on a day-to-day basis with limited supervision.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated apprentice who is ready to work in a fast paced and dynamic team. The role requires an ability to learn quickly, to act confidently and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

The wide range of activities you will engage in requires good organisation skills and an ability to prioritise. You must be able to behave sensitively and maintain confidentiality where needed. You will be expected to record your activities accurately on an electronic database.

This post is fully funded by the Department of Health and Social Care for a period of 4 years. You will focus on tackling illegal and underage sales as well as supporting businesses to achieve compliance across a vast range of tobacco and vapes regulations designed to protect consumers and in particular children, while at the same time, it is a requirement of the position that you work towards gaining a L6 professional qualification, which is an excellent development opportunity to learn and apply the skills, across all areas of Trading Standards and Licensing activity.

If you are interested in improving young people's life chances and working for Salford, and can demonstrate our values of Pride, Passion, People and Personal Responsibility, it really is an exciting time to join us. For any queries, please contact Marsha Bell via marsha.bell@salford.gov.uk or 0161 925 1311.

We will not be accepting candidates who require a sponsorship for this position.
