Wessex Cancer Support is dedicated to ensuring that everyone in the Wessex region has access to personalised support that empowers them to live well with and beyond cancer. We provide free services to those affected by cancer, including emotional support, wellbeing services, and a transport service for treatment.

Summary

We are seeking a compassionate and reliable Driver to join our team at Wessex Cancer Support on a temporary basis to cover staff absence. In this role, you will be responsible for providing safe and efficient transportation for clients travelling to and from cancer treatments. Your contribution will play a vital role in supporting individuals during their challenging journey.

About the role

Wessex Cancer Support provides a

daily

minibus transport service from the Hover Travel Ferry Terminal in Portsmouth to Queen Alexander Hospital in Portsmouth. The Service operates from 10am-3:30pm Monday-Friday. The service is provided for patients from the Isle of Wight requiring essential treatment for cancer that is not available to them locally on the Island. The bus service is a highly valued resource to these patients.

Due to our regular driver being unavailable from 31 July 2025 until 12 September 2025, we urgently require an experienced driver who has the correct driving license (Category D1) to provide cover for the service during this period

Responsibilities

Transport clients safely to and from cancer treatment appointments. Maintain the vehicle in good working condition through regular checks, cleaning and basic maintenance. Communicate effectively with clients to ensure a comfortable travel experience. Assist clients with boarding and alighting from the vehicle as needed. Adhere to all traffic regulations and safety protocols while driving. Keep accurate records of journeys made and any incidents that occur.

Requirements

Valid driver's license (category D1) with a clean driving record (max 3 points). Be registered on the DBS Update Service (an up-to-date DBS check will be required) Ability to work independently Ability to maintain professionalism and empathy while working with vulnerable individuals. Strong communication skills to interact positively and compassionately with clients. An understanding of cancer and the issues that patients and their loved one's face, with the resilience needed for an emotionally demanding environment Be willing to carry out cleaning duties at the start/end of each day Be comfortable with secure management of donations Experience in minibus driving preferred. Basic mechanical knowledge for vehicle maintenance is advantageous. Basic first aid training would be beneficial
