Role overview:



Tes Magazine is looking for a news reporter to join its award-winning team.

The magazine (formerly Times Educational Supplement) has been leading on education news in the UK for 115 years, supporting schools and holding policy-makers to account.

We're seeking an ambitious news journalist who's passionate about public policy and/or education, and has a portfolio of hard-hitting scoops.

You might be a regional journalist with a strong record of exclusives who's looking to cover a national patch, or a general reporter wanting to specialise and produce agenda-setting investigations.

In this role, you'll deliver exclusives across a range of regional and national patches by honing contacts, scrutinising data and asking probing questions.

You'll work towards appearing in the wider media to discuss education stories and receive the support you need to become a top-flight reporter.

this role is focused on news writing (including long-reads and investigations) and is not suitable for candidates who wish to focus on features.



Key Responsibilities:



Deliver agenda-setting scoops, long-reads and investigative reports for Tes Magazine Build and maintain a broad network of education sector contacts Unearth exclusive stories through data journalism and persistent inquiry Represent Tes in wider media commentary and appearances Collaborate with the editorial team on high-impact journalism projects Uphold journalistic excellence and ethical reporting standards

What will you need to succeed?

NCTJ qualification or equivalent, ideally including 100wpm shorthand Demonstrated portfolio of exclusive news stories and investigative journalism Ability to uncover original stories from data, documents and sources Experience with or enthusiasm for public policy and the education sector Excellent written, analytical and interpersonal communication skills Strong time management and ability to juggle multiple assignments Confidence in developing and maintaining senior-level contacts
