Research Assistant/ Associate in Scalable Gatemon Quantum Computing with Cryo-CMOS

Job Purpose

We welcome applications for a Research Assistant/Associate position in the Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering Division, at the University of Glasgow, UK. You will be supervised by Dr Kaveh Delfanazari and collaborate with Professor Hadi Heidari, and Professor Martin Weides. Through this position, you will make a contribution to/make a leading contribution to an EPSRC project in \'Scalable Gatemon Quantum Computing with Cryo-CMOS\', aiming at the development of a new type of superconducting quantum circuits and their integration with cryogenic CMOS addressing the challenges of scalability, stability and integration of quantum computing. You will have access to our world-class facilities at the Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering Division, Centre for Quantum Technology as well as the state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities at the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre (JWNC) of the University of Glasgow. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the daily supervision of PhD students within the team, formulate and submit research publications and research proposals, and help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Perform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of Dr Kaveh Delfanazari:

1. Plan and conduct assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy.

2. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, and drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.

3. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/ James Watt School of Engineering/Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering Division, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.

4. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project & subject area, & develop/implement a suitable research strategy.

5. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.

6. Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.

7. Contribute to the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.

8. Collaborate with colleagues across the research group/School/College/University and wider community (e.g. Academic and Industrial Partners).

9. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and School research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.

10. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.

12. Contribute to the enhancement of the University\'s international profile in line with the University\'s Strategic Plan, World Changers Welcome

For appointment at Grade 7

13. Perform the above duties with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility, particularly in relation to planning, funding, developing and maintaining collaborations, and publishing research.

14. Establish and sustain a track record of independent and joint published research to establish and maintain your expert reputation in the subject area.

15. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.

16. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.

17. Make a leading contribution to Teaching activities (e.g. demonstrating etc) and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with Principal Investigator.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

A1 SCQF Level 10 (Honours degree) in a relevant subject or a cognate discipline, or equivalent. Specialist theoretical or practical knowledge of superconducting or semiconducting quantum circuits, low noise and high frequency cryogenic electronics, clean room technologies, and micro and nanofabrication.

A2 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the wider subject area or subject specialism.

For appointment at Grade 7:

A3 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).

Desirable

B1 An awarded (or recently submitted or near completion) PhD in subject specialism or equivalent.

Skills

Essential:

C1 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject area or subject specialism of Josephson junctions-based devices and circuits, superconducting or semiconducting quantum circuits, cryogenic electronics, CMOS technology, micro/nanofabrication, low noise high-frequency characterisation and measurements.

C2 Knowledge of using high-frequency simulation packages for nanodevice and circuit design and modelling.

C3 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.

C4 Good programming skills and experience in deploying machine learning techniques in quantum device and circuit design and modelling.

C5 Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely.

C6 Extensive data analysis/interpretation skills.

C7 Self motivation, initiative and independent thought/working.

For appointment at Grade 7:

C8 Technical knowledge and skills meeting and exceeding the essential requirements above.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence as illustrated by assessment of the literature, design & analysis of experiments & drafting of papers.

E2 Experience in targeting, publishing and presentation of research results in at least one quality journal/conference.

E3 Experience developing and deploying techniques using high-frequency simulation packages, using nanofabrication techniques and tools for quantum devices and circuit fabrication, high frequency and low noise characterisation and cryogenic measurements.

For appointment at Grade 7:

E4 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, normally including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher.

E5 A track record of publication and presentation of research results in quality journals/conferences, with an emerging national or international reputation.

E6 Experience in the identification of project objectives and making a leading contribution to academic activities.

E7 Experience in undertaking independent research.

Desirable:

F1 Experience in working in cleanrooms,

F2 Experience in developing and deploying appropriate micro and nanofabrication techniques for high quality quantum device realisation,

F3 Experience in cryogenic DC/RF spectroscopy.

Salary will be Grade 6/7, \xc2\xa332,332 - \xc2\xa336,024 / \xc2\xa339,347 - \xc2\xa344,263 per annum.

This post is full time, and has funding for up to 3 years
