We are recruiting for a motivated and enthusiastic Research Assistant to work in our Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre (BMRC) and join the research group of Dr Nik Georgopoulos.
The post is supported by funding which is part of the research agreement between Sheffield Hallam University and Paxman Ltd, the international pioneers in scalp cooling devices.
The project utilises cell models to understand the mechanisms by which cooling protects human cells from chemotherapy drug-mediated toxicities. The aim is to provide evidence for the efficacy of the Paxman scalp and limb cooling devices in reducing the main side effects of chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients and to enhance the efficacy of such devices, and thus transform the lives of millions of cancer patients worldwide.
You will have experience in cell and molecular biology techniques (including imaging / microscopy, protein detection by immunoblotting), and extensive human cell culture experience. Furthermore, bioanalytical expertise (for instance knowledge of ICP-MS mass-spec based detection of biologics) would be highly desirable. This experience will be necessary to perform experiments that help us understand the mechanisms by which novel biologics cause chemotherapy induced hair loss and to design new approaches to curtail such side effects.
The assistant will be required to communicate research findings in meetings with multidisciplinary teams at Paxman Ltd. They will undertake research tasks to support PhD and Master's level students. General lab management duties will also be required to support the group.
You will be joining a multidisciplinary research environment within the BMRC, a vibrant research centre with excellent facilities. You will experience a welcoming and inclusive research group which comprises both staff and postgraduate students, supported by the excellent technical team at the BMRC.
This role is funded for 23 months in the first instance.
