Job Description

We are recruiting for a motivated and enthusiastic Research Assistant to work in our Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre (BMRC) and join the research group of Dr Nik Georgopoulos.

The post is supported by funding which is part of the research agreement between Sheffield Hallam University and Paxman Ltd, the international pioneers in cooling-based medical devices for the reduction or prevention of side effects of cancer chemotherapy.

The project utilises cell models to understand the mechanisms by which cooling protects human cells from chemotherapy drug-mediated toxicities. The aim is to provide evidence for the efficacy of the Paxman scalp and limb cooling devices in reducing the main side-effects of chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients and to enhance the efficacy of such devices and thus transform the lives of millions of cancer patients worldwide.

You will be expected to have specific, hands-on cell culture experience of differentiation of human neuronal precursor cells into differentiated neurites, as well as extensive experience in cell and molecular biology techniques (including imaging/microscopy, protein detection by immunoblotting) and cytotoxicity detection assays by automated multimode cell imaging analysis.

The assistant will be required to communicate research findings in meetings with multidisciplinary teams at Paxman Ltd. They will undertake research tasks to also support PhD and Master's level students. General lab management duties will also be required to support the group.

You will be joining a multidisciplinary research environment within the BMRC, a vibrant research centre with excellent facilities. You will experience a welcoming and inclusive research group which comprises both staff and postgraduate students, supported by the excellent technical team at the BMRC. The BMRC sits within the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences.

You will be contractually enrolled into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) one of the largest and most generous defined benefit pension schemes in the country.

Each year you will earn a secure pension benefit of 1/49th of your salary and the University will pay pension contributions towards the cost of this pension (currently worth about 22% of your salary). For a starting salary of 25,000, for example, the University would pay just over 5,400 in the first year of your employment and you would earn a pension of 510 p.a. for that year (payable from your State Pension Age).
