About the role The Bartlett School of Architecture is seeking to appoint a part-time Research Assistant (0.5FTE) from November 2025 to March 2026 for a UCL funded research project. The key duties and responsibilities for this role are the following:

  • Develop and validate 2D and 3D Finite Element Models (FEA) to simulate heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation) through pure metal and nanocomposite-coated metal panels.
  • Define material properties for the model based on experimental data (e.g., thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, density, emissivity).
  • Parametrically analyse the effect of coating thickness, filler fraction, and layer structure on overall thermal resistance (R-value).
  • Collaborate with experimental team members to validate model predictions against laboratory measurements from hot-box tests or heat flux sensors.
Role specific details:
  • Salary is 19,574 per annum.
  • This is a fixed-term role until 31st March 2026. We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible.

About you The successful candidate will demonstrate proven experience in computational heat transfer modelling using industry-standard FEA software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent/Mechanical, COMSOL Multiphysics, Abaqus) and they will have a strong understanding of heat transfer fundamentals: conduction, convection, and radiation. They will assist the research team in developing bespoke coatings for metal components.
