The Royal Free Campus of UCL Respiratory includes clinical research teams active in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and tuberculosis (TB). Professor Hurst (https://profiles.ucl.ac.uk/3662-john-hurst ) is an NIHR Global Health Research Professor with an active programme of work in COPD both in the UK and overseas, aiming to reduce the burden of COPD. This post will provide statistical expertise and data analysis for Professor Hurst's global health research programmes in COPD, whilst supporting the wider department on other respiratory research projects. UCL Respiratory is part of the UCL Division of Medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Through co-supervision by Professor Julie Barber (https://profiles.ucl.ac.uk/2312-julie-barber ), the post holder will have close links with the Biostatistics group within the Department of Statistical Science at UCL - the longest established university statistics department in the world. This is one of nine departments in the UCL Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MAPS). The Biostatistics group works with the medical community through the UCLH/UCL NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the UCL Primary Care and Mental Health (PRIMENT) Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) and also conducts their own research into statistical methodology relevant to health care research. Both departments teach at all levels (undergraduate single/combined honours, service courses, MSc and PhD) including MSc courses in Respiratory Medicine and Medical Statistics.


About the role

The post is an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral statistician with a strong background in statistics as applied to health research studies who would like to grow that skills set. You will gain hands on experience while collaborating on research projects including randomised trials and observational studies. You will advise on study design and will be responsible for planning and carrying out analysis of study data. The primary focus will be leading analyses from a programme of work to study diagnosis and management of COPD in Brazil, in collaboration with a team led by Professor Renata Mendes at the Federal University of San Carlos (UFSCar). Travel to Brazil will be part of the role, supporting the UFSCar team. In addition, you will have opportunities to work on other applied research projects within Respiratory Medicine and will also be able to develop your own methodological research portfolio and expertise. This may include opportunities to work with members of the Biostatistics Group at UCL Statistical Science. You will be able to attend and contribute to the Statistics Department and the PRIMENT CTU seminar series on statistical methodology. You will be located at UCL Respiratory (Royal Free Campus) and will be accountable to Professor John Hurst (UCL Respiratory) and Professor Julie Barber (UCL Statistical Science). This post is available immediately and funded for a minimum of 1 year in the first instance. About you

You will be a post-doctoral statistician with experience and expertise in design and analysis of health research studies. The ability to code in STATA is essential for this role and experience of coding in R would also be an advantage. You will be collaborative and reliable.
