About the role


------------------


You will investigate the molecular mechanisms governing the subcellular organisation of signalling of the glucagon receptor family. The post will involve planning and performing experiments in the laboratory, developing methods, managing projects, and providing day-to-day supervision to master's and PhD students, as well as collaborating with the rest of the team.



The Research Associate will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals, present their results at national and international conferences, and assist in attracting external research funding. This project, based at the National Heart and Lung Institute, will involve close collaboration with the Group of Prof. Alejandra Tomas in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion, and Reproduction


What you would be doing

To take the initiative in the planning of research To guide masters and PhD students To identify and develop suitable techniques and apparatus for the collection and analysis of data To conduct data analysis To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings To write reports for submission to research sponsors To present findings to colleagues and at conferences To submit publications to refereed journals To attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary To develop contacts and research collaborations within the College and the wider community To promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College To contribute to bids for research grants To conduct and plan one's own scientific work with appropriate supervision To maintain a highly organised and accurate record of experimental work To actively participate in the research program of the Group To publish in high-quality journals and to present data at national and international meetings To participate in Group research meetings and internal seminars To collaborate with other allied scientists within Imperial College and elsewhere in London and abroad, as appropriate. To contribute to the smooth running of the Group's laboratory and work with other scientists, clinicians, technicians, and students within the laboratory To comply with the College, Division, and Unit safety practices and to attend courses on safety when appropriate

What we are looking for

Hold a PhD in biochemistry, molecular cell biology, biomedicine, or closely related discipline

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range 43,863 - 47,223 per annum



Practical experience with cell culture and biochemistry techniques, particularly in beta cell/islet biology Experience in GPCR trafficking and signaling, particularly in glucagon receptor family (GLP-1R) biology/pharmacology Practical experience in high-resolution microscopy, including super-resolution fluorescence and electron microscopy, as well as data quantification Knowledge of the spatiotemporal regulation of signalling of GPCRs and intracellular membrane trafficking pathways Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature Ability to develop and apply new concepts Creative approach to problem-solving Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication Ability to organise own work with minimal supervision Ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines Advanced computer skills, including word-processing, spreadsheets and the Internet Ability to direct the work of a small research team and motivate others to produce a high standard of work Discipline and regard for confidentiality and security at all times Willingness to undertake any necessary training for the role Willingness to travel both within the United Kingdom and abroad to conduct research and attend conferences Willingness to work out of normal working hours (including weekends) if the requirements of the project demand

This is a part - time ( 17.5 h/w) , fixed-term (12 months) based at Hammersmith Campus.
