Join a pioneering research programme at the forefront of biological imaging innovation. We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant or Associate to contribute to the development of genetically encoded bioharmonophores, a next-generation optical probe that will transform deep-tissue imaging.
The project is funded by the BBSRC and will be hosted in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London, in collaboration with the Imperial College London and Leica Microsystems Imaging Hub. You will work on molecular engineering, optical characterisation and imaging applications of bioharmonophores to study complex cellular processes with unprecedented depth, clarity and specificity.

What you would be doing
---------------------------
Engineering and screening genetically encoded bioharmonophores using bacterial encapsulin systems.
Performing optical characterisation (e.g. two-photon microscopy, second harmonic generation imaging) and biocompatibility testing.
Developing multiplexed imaging strategies for live-cell and deep-tissue applications.
Contributing to data analysis, presentations, publications and dissemination at high-profile conferences.
Collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of bioengineers, molecular biologists and optical physicists.
What we are looking for
---------------------------
A PhD (Research Associate) in molecular/cellular biology, molecular bioengineering, synthetic biology or a related discipline.
Experience with molecular cloning, protein expression or optical microscopy.
Knowledge of live imaging and/or zebrafish models is highly desirable.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.

The post is available to start from 01 October 2025 on a full-time on a fixed-term contract for 12 months in the first instance, with any extension subject to research funding.
Salary on appointment is limited to SP18, 50,893 per annum depending on experience.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range 43,863 to 47,223 per annum.*
