FTE:

Term:

Fixed Term (Until 31/07/2026)

Closing Date:

Applications are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate position on the project: "Krylov subspace methods for non-symmetric PDE problems: a deeper understanding and faster convergence", https://gow.epsrc.ukri.org/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/W035561/1. The project is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI).

The project concerns the solution of linear systems arising from the numerical discretisation of partial differential equations (PDEs), which are critical to simulations in a swathe of applications. The methods of choice for these systems are often preconditioned Krylov subspace methods, but for nonsymmetric problems theory for preconditioners and solvers is still lacking. The overarching aim of this research is to develop novel theory that underpins preconditioner design and efficient solvers for systems with nonsymmetric coefficient matrices.

This appointment is part of a collaboration with Trinity College, Dublin and funding provides for the appointment of two linked PDRAs, one at Strathclyde (Glasgow) and one with our partners at Trinity College, Dublin.

You will principally be concerned with theoretical and computational aspects of preconditioning for linear systems arising from PDEs, and applications to high-frequency Maxwell and Helmholtz problems. This will be mainly done under the supervision of Dr Jennifer Pestana at Strathclyde. You will also have the opportunity to work with the Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) on implementing state-of-the-art methods in the NAG Library.

There will be opportunities for collaboration with Dr Kirk Soodhalter and the Trinity College, Dublin PDRA, as well as a range of international experts on fundamental problems in numerical linear algebra. The funding will support your travel to select conferences and visits to related researchers so that you can benefit from a wide array of knowledge and perspectives about the research topics, as well as for networking purposes. The funding will also bring colleagues to both Strathclyde and Trinity for collaboration, and it will further support two related workshops, one at Trinity and one at Strathclyde.

Formal interviews for this post will be held in Late November/Early December 2025.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Dr Jennifer Pestana, Senior Lecturer (jennifer.pestana@strath.ac.uk).
