Overview
We are looking for a postdoctoral research associate, to work on a project titled "Understanding the Role of Self-Poisoning in Polymer Crystallisation" funded by Leverhulme Trust.
Recent experimental advances have shown that "self-poisoning", where the growth of polymer crystals is slowed down, not by impurities but by polymer molecules themselves having the wrong conformations or crystallising in a competing crystal polymorph, is a much broader phenomenon.
On the theoretical side of the project, we aim to construct a new kinetic framework of polymer crystal growth that would reproduce quantitatively experimental data in different polymeric systems with different self-poisoning mechanisms, that classical theories were unable to handle. Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics simulations will also be carried out to reveal the competing kinetic pathways at the growth front.
The experimental part will use multiple experimental methods, including but not restricted to optical microscopy, optical tomography, high-resolution AFM, in-situ and post-mortem SAXS/WAXS, as well as DSC and FSC, to provide the supporting evidence for our new theory.
While the PDRA will focus on either the theory or experimental side of the project, it is critical that a keen understanding of the other part is maintained throughout the project.
Main duties and responsibilities
Carry out literature reviews, and follow closely the most recent experimental/theoretical advances in the field.
Communicate with your research supervisors and identify the scientific problems to tackle and make the research plan.
Follow the research plan and carry out research work, either theory or experimental, and take all necessary training on e.g. health and safety, specific softwares or instruments.
Report and discuss your research progress to your supervisors and other related group members on a regular basis, and make necessary changes to your research plan accordingly.
Communicate with members of the group who work on the other theory/experimental part of the project, making sure the two parts run smoothly in parallel.
Preparation of manuscripts for publication in reviewed journals, on the basis of the research results obtained.
Communication of research results to others in the related field through attendance of conferences and workshops, in oral and poster presentations.
Communication of research results to the general public through outreach activities.
Supervising and guiding of other students in the group.
Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
