  • Research Associate
About the role

In this role you will work within the School of Physics and Astronomy\'s Planetary Science Group. The primary research topic is the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction focusing on the distribution of magnetospheric plasma and the structure of ULF waves in the terrestrial radiation belts. ULF waves play a central role in space weather phenomena, transporting both energy and momentum throughout the magnetosphere-ionosphere system. These waves are also central to the energisation and decay of highly energetic radiation belt particles. This project will develop models of plasma mass density and Alfv\xc3\xa9n velocity and investigate their effects on the structure of the observed ULF wave fields, allowing us to quantify the role of ULF waves in the energisation and decay of the radiation belts.

You will work collaboratively and independently as part of the research team to achieve defined milestones and produce high quality research as part of your role.

About you

You will hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in a research area relevant to space plasma physics or planetary science. You will be able to evidence research experience and skills in a relevant subject, alongside knowledge of Solar-Terrestrial physics at an international research level.

We are looking for someone with strong programming and data analysis skills. You will show a record of productive research and be able demonstrate the ability to produce published research papers. Knowledge of scientific computing languages such as Python, IDL, and FORTRAN is an asset.
