Job description

Edinburgh Napier University

is the number one Scottish Modern University for research in Computer Science & Informatics, Engineering and for Architecture, Built Environment and Planning, as per the Research Excellence Framework 2021.

Our School of Computing, Engineering & the Built Environment is currently leading an EPSRC-funded project and recruiting a

Research Fellow in High-Fidelity Modelling of Hydrogen Combustion Operations

to contribute to breakthrough research on the clean and efficient use of hydrogen in next-generation gas turbines..

The Role:

As a Research Fellow you will have the opportunity to join the prestigious Horizon Europe funded project, ACCEPT (Advanced Clean Combustion for hydrogen-based Power Technology) and use your specialisation in computational fluid dynamics and/or combustion to utilise and evaluate sophisticated turbulent combustion models that capture complex turbulence-chemistry interactions.

Your knowledge and expertise of conducting simulations of reactive flows using advanced CFD codes (e.g., OpenFOAM, Converge CFD, ANSYS Fluent or similar custom/commercial solvers) will allow you to develop and apply Large Eddy Simulation (LES) models to simulate turbulent premixed and non-premixed combustion of hydrogen and hydrogen/natural gas blends using software such as OpenFOAM or Converge CFD.

Your proficiency in a relevant programming language (e.g., C++, Fortran, Python) for code customisation, scripting, and data analysis, will also serve you well as you design and execute numerical simulations of canonical burner geometries (e.g., V-flames, bluff-body stabilised flames) that align directly with the experiments being conducted by project partners.

We anticipate that you will have the ability to work both independently on challenging research problems and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary, international team, therefore becoming a valued member of the research team, collaborating effectively with academic and industrial partners within the international ACCEPT consortium, participating actively in project meetings and contributing to project reports.

What we will need from you:

PhD in a relevant field such as Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics, with a clear specialisation in computational fluid dynamics and/or combustion Demonstrable experience in conducting simulations of reactive flows using advanced CFD codes (e.g., OpenFOAM, Converge CFD, ANSYS Fluent or similar custom/commercial solvers) A strong theoretical understanding of turbulence modelling and turbulent combustion modelling, particularly Large Eddy Simulation (LES) Proficiency in a relevant programming language (e.g., C++, Fortran, Python) for code customisation, scripting, and data analysis

Benefits we offer:

Employer contributions of 17.6% - 26% (depending on circumstances), and a minimum of 46 days holiday.

Additional information:

Salary:
