About us

------------

The Centre for Translational Genomics focuses on discovering genotype-phenotype relationships through multi-omics and disease outcome data from population and patient cohorts. We employ deep-learning and machine learning, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, and computational biology methods to organise, interpret, and apply data to support precision medicine. A key focus is accurate risk stratification of people at risk of developing multiple long-term conditions linked to cardiovascular disease. The role is set within a vibrant research environment, with related work ongoing at the Institutes of Cardiovascular Science and Health Informatics. This includes expertise in deep-learning, health data science, and methods development in Mendelian randomization. UCL boasts a strong Computer Science Department and a number of local AI-focused tech start-ups with which our group collaborates.

About the role

------------------

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an arrhythmia of the upper heart chambers (the atria), marked by a loss of coordinated contraction. It may arise from various underlying conditions and is associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death, progressive heart failure, stroke, early cognitive decline, and dementia. For this role, we are seeking a candidate with a keen interest in applying and extending existing computational pipelines to predict disease risk using multi-modal data sources--such as electrocardiograms, organ-specific imaging, and omics datasets.

About you

-------------

This role is well suited to individuals with a strong computational background and a working understanding of biology. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD, or possess equivalent experience, in computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related discipline. We are seeking someone with a demonstrable track record in research and a high level of proficiency in quantitative analysis. Experience with large-scale data analysis on Unix-based systems is essential. Applied experience with electrocardiography, omics data, and machine or deep learning methods is highly desirable. You will be self-motivated, resourceful, and capable of working independently, while also contributing effectively as part of a collaborative team. We place a strong emphasis on supporting career development and fostering research independence. The successful applicant will have access to large-scale population biobanks (including UK Biobank, All of Us, and Our Future Health), nationwide prescription data (GPRD), and a suite of in-house bioinformatics tools. The appointed candidate will be supported in developing a research profile at the interface of deep learning, imaging, and electronic health records. There will also be opportunities to further advance software development skills, with a focus on creating and maintaining computational tools for the broader scientific community. In particular, we are aiming to develop robust application programming interfaces (APIs) to facilitate the sharing and integration of validated models.
