The Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS) at UCL combines the strengths of UCL's basic biological and preclinical sciences and is associated with 11 Nobel Laureates. Research in FLS focuses on trying to answer some of the most enduring questions about life on earth, and also to solve the urgent problems faced by all living things. Our research spans an incredible breadth of scientific areas, from studies of the behaviour of single molecules, to developing cells, neuronal circuits, and up to entire ecosystems full of living things. We are supported by platform technologies and facilities ranging from advanced electron microscopy to a research centre on a National Trust nature reserve.



This is an exciting opportunity to join the Conradt group in the Research Department 'Cell and Developmental Biology', Biosciences, in FLS. The Conradt group is a collaborative, innovative team that is committed to cutting-edge research in developmental and stem cell biology. The team addresses fundamental question such as how cell fates diverge during asymmetric cell division. In this context, the team investigates gene expression plasticity and the unequal segregation of factors, including cellular organelles. To address these questions, the team performs studies at the systems, single cell and single molecule level and employs state of the art technologies, ranging from CRISPR/Cas-mediated genome editing and real time super-resolution imaging to the use of microfluidic devices and the development of deep learning segmentation tools. For their studies, the Conradt group uses the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model.

About the role

------------------


The main purpose of this position is to undertake research in the Conradt group related to the BBSRC-funded project "Asymmetric mitochondrial inheritance: Charting mechanism(s) and function(s) during animal development". This will involve both independent and collaborative research activities. Approaches used will include biochemistry, molecular biology, genome engineering as well as imaging-based methods.



An acceptable DBS check is required to carry out this role.



This is an open ended contract, with 3 years in the first instance.



Appointment at Grade 7 (post-doctoral research fellow) is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary 38,357 - 41,005 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis.

About you

The applicant is expected to undertake independent and collaborative research on the mechanism(s) and function(s) of mitochondrial segregation in C. elegans using biochemical, molecular, genetic and imaging-based methods, with the goal of advancing our understanding of this process as evidenced by publications in international, peer-reviewed journals.



You must have a PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology or related disciplines, experience in biochemistry, molecular biology and advanced molecular cloning and proven knowledge of data analysis and statistics. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also essential.
