About the role
The Bartlett School of Architecture is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in Secure Spatial Analytics (0.5 FTE) as part of the MRC-funded project Your Health and Where You Live. The post is funded until 31 August 2026 in the first instance. Shorter full-time appointments may also be considered.
As a Research Fellow in Secure Spatial Analytics, you will join a collaborative team at UCL's Bartlett School of Architecture, working with colleagues at the University of Liverpool and NHS partners on the cutting edge of privacy-preserving health and environment research. Your main responsibilities will be to design, prototype and implement novel disclosure-control methods and spatial modelling tools, contributing open-source solutions that can be adopted across Trusted Research Environments nationwide. You will bring a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline, strong programming skills (ideally R and/or Python), and expertise in spatial data science, statistical disclosure control and secure data environments.
The role requires excellent analytical and communication skills, alongside the ability to work independently and as part of a multi-institutional, transdisciplinary team. The salary for this role is Grade 7, 45,103 per annum (pro rata at 0.5 FTE). A higher starting salary may be available depending on the agreed appointment date and duration. This role is eligible for hybrid and flexible working, with a minimum of 40% of contracted hours to be worked on site.
About you
The Research Fellow will be expected to design, prototype and evaluate privacy-preserving methods for spatial analysis that can be deployed within Trusted Research Environments (TREs) and federated frameworks. They will deliver robust, open-source tools and guidance packages, including well-documented code, test suites and user resources, to ensure reproducibility and usability across NHS and academic settings. The Fellow will translate enriched spatial datasets into place-based, policy-relevant research outputs, contributing to publications, workshops and stakeholder engagement. Success in the role will be measured by the development of scalable, secure analytical methods, effective collaboration with project partners, and tangible contributions to the Your Health and Where You Live programme's goal of enabling household-level environment-health research with real-world policy impact.
