Research Fellow Polymers And Composites

Belfast, United Kingdom

Job Description

We are seeking a Research Fellow to join our dynamic Polymers and Composites research team, contributing to a project focused on stretch blow moulding and the use of artificial intelligence in spectroscopic data analysis.
This role forms part of a larger research effort exploring advanced polymer processing techniques and data driven methods to improve material performance and manufacturing efficiency. Working with an experienced academic team and external partners, you will contribute to experimental work involving polymer processing equipment (such as injection moulding and stretch blow moulding) and analytical tools including FTIR and Raman spectroscopy.
You will help design and implement experimental protocols, analyse complex datasets using AI tools, and contribute to the preparation of funding applications and high-quality research outputs. You'll also have the opportunity to present your findings at national and international conferences and contribute to lab safety, planning, and day-to-day operations.
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated researcher to advance their career in a supportive and collaborative environment, with access to excellent facilities and opportunities for professional development.
About the person:
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with a strong foundation in polymer processing and spectroscopy, and an interest in applying artificial intelligence or machine learning to complex data.
The successful candidate will have (or be nearing completion of) a PhD in a relevant field such as polymer science, materials engineering, or mechanical engineering. Essential experience includes the use of polymer analysis equipment (e.g. FTIR, Raman), and practical knowledge of materials like PET, including how they are processed using injection moulding and stretch blow moulding.
You will also have:

  • Experience applying AI or coding tools (e.g. Python or MATLAB) to analyse scientific data
  • A track record of conducting and interpreting experimental work
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research team
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Desirable experience includes building experimental rigs, using LabVIEW or similar platforms for data acquisition, and contributing to academic publications or funding proposals.
  • We welcome applicants with a proactive approach to problem-solving and a strong interest in applied materials research.
To be successful at shortlisting stage, please ensure you clearly evidence in your application how you meet the essential and, where applicable, desirable criteria listed in the Candidate Information.
This post is available for 6 months. Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
