Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range \xc2\xa333,348 to \xc2\xa343,155 with potential progression once in post to \xc2\xa345,737

Background

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled researcher to join our team and contribute to the field of aviation combustor emissions modelling. The successful candidate will use evolutionary algorithms to develop fuel flexible combustor models to predict the environmental impact of aviation and the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels and developing strategies to mitigate emissions at engine exit plane. This post is part of the wider Horizon Europe REFMAP project, and applicants will be expected to collaborate with researchers as part of this international consortium.

Role Summary

  • Conduct research on reactor network-based combustor emissions modelling, focusing on the development and improvement of models to accurately estimate emissions from combustors including changes in fuel chemistry.
  • Analyse and interpret data from various sources, including engine test data, emissions measurements, and models developed by others.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate aviation combustor emissions models into broader climate change and environmental impact assessments.
  • Stay up to date with the latest research and advancements in sustainable aviation fuels and aviation combustor emissions modelling, contribute to the scientific literature through publications and conference presentations.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to the wider REFMAP project
  • Contribute to writing bids and generating funding
Person Specification
  • PhD in a relevant field such as aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science or applied mathematics
  • Knowledge of aviation combustor emissions, including the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and other pollutants
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, or C++
  • Familiarity with CHEMKIN and CANTERA reactor network modelling
  • Familiarity with evolutionary modelling techniques
  • Experience with high performance computing systems
  • High level analytical capability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Experience in collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and working on research projects with real-world applications.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research project
