Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow: Artificial Intelligence For Healthcare Uncertainty Quantification

North West London, United Kingdom

Job Description

About us Dept of Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering - As a global leader in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering research and education, the department fosters close collaborations with clinicians, practitioners and scientists in major teaching hospitals, which enables our researchers to be at the forefront of healthcare engineering and for our students to learn about the latest innovations from leading experts in the field. The research undertaken at the department covers a broad range of themes, from electrical impendance tomography to the use of AI to improve radiotherapeutics treatment. The UCL Cancer Institute is the hub for cancer research at University College London, one of the World\'s leading universities. The Institute draws together over 400 talented scientists who are working together to translate research discoveries into developing kinder, more effective therapies for cancer patients. Further Information about the UCL Cancer Institute can be found on our website https://www.ucl.ac.uk/cancer/

About the role AI-based decision systems are starting to achieve near human performance in a range of tasks but as these models become more powerful, they are also becoming more complex and hence opaque. For such methodologies to be widely accepted in \xe2\x80\x9chigh-stakes\xe2\x80\x9d applications in healthcare, they need to 1) clinically interpretable and learn biomedically relevant features, 2) able to quantify patient level uncertainty along with high population level accuracy, and 3) able to meaningfully and robustly integrate data of multiple modalities for a joint decision-making system. We are looking to hire 3 high calibre AI Scientists to join a multidisciplinary team with expertise in cancer biology and computational science and to be part of a wider Computer Vision programme of research at UCL for the purpose of developing computer vision solutions in the area of AI for Healthcare. Being in the lead centre for a UK-wide digital pathology AI programme for sarcoma (a rare cancer), the successful candidates will develop novel computational models employing digitised pathology images and in one instance genomic sequencing. Each scientist will primarily focus on one of the open challenges in AI. Applications should include a CV and a Cover Letter: In the Cover Letter please evidence the essential and desirable criteria in the Person Specification part of the . (By including a Cover Letter, you can leave blank the \xe2\x80\x9cWhy you have applied for this role\xe2\x80\x9d field in the application form, which is limited in the number of characters it will allow). The position will be available for 24 months in the first instance.

About you Applicants must have a strong computational PhD (or close to completion) in one of the areas of computer science / statistics / data science / information engineering/ bioinformatics/ biomedical engineering or equivalent subjects.
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if it is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary \xc2\xa335,896- \xc2\xa338,466 per annum including London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis (with corrections).
The candidate should have good published experience of developing new machine learning and computer vision and strong computational modelling and programming skills in Python and/or C++ as demonstrated by published open source codes.

Experience of publishing in one of the areas of anomaly/outlier detection, conformal analysis, uncertainty quantification and knowledge about the possible challenges of working with digital pathology images are desirable but not essential.

For appointment at Grade 8 candidates must have postdoctoral experience in the same area as the above PhD requirement with commensurate research outputs and a strong publication record in high impact journals and leading conferences in the field.

What we offer As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:

41 Days holiday (including 27 days annual leave 8 bank holiday and 6 closure days)
