The Centre for Population Health Sciences at the Usher Institute within The University of Edinburgh is looking for an enthusiastic software engineer, informatician or data scientist to join our team on a full time, fixed-term post, available immediately. The post offers opportunities for publishing academic papers and can be used as the basis for moving into a career in research.

The Opportunity:
We have recently developed a new method of statistical analysis for the problem of finding which genes cause disease, with exciting pilot results and promising drug targets for type 1 diabetes. The post holder will play a key role in helping us extend and apply this method to other diseases by further developing and optimising existing software tools and computational pipelines for the processing and statistical analysis of complex human genetic and molecular datasets.

The post holder will work closely with the PIs, Dr Athina Spiliopoulou and Prof Paul McKeigue, and with postdoctoral researchers and PhD students in our team that work on statistical genetics. They will also interact and collaborate with academic and industry contacts on existing projects, including the prediction of response to treatment in rheumatoid arthritis, and with colleagues at the Diabetes Medical Informatics and Epidemiology research group at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • PhD in a computer science-related field or a numerate discipline OR equivalent experience.
  • Broad programming experience, including demonstrable knowledge of good software engineering practices (i.e. documentation, unit testing, version control).
  • Good communication skills and ability to work within a team. Ability to manage time and work plans to achieve the objectives of a project.
  • Experience working with relational databases (e.g. MySQL), Unix-based operating systems, or virtualization in software development (e.g. Docker, Singularity) would be beneficial.
