Are you passionate about cutting-edge acoustics research and sustainability? Do you want to help shape the future of noise control in energy infrastructure? Join us at the University of Southampton as a Research Fellow in the exciting interdisciplinary project "Tone Down: Objective and Subjective Assessment of Transformer Noise Reduction with Retrofitted Sustainable Acoustic Metamaterials", funded by National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET).

This project aims to revolutionise noise mitigation for high-voltage power transformers by developing

acoustic metamaterials

-based treatments made from

sustainable and durable materials

that can be retrofitted to existing transformer enclosures. Transformer noise, particularly its low-frequency tonal components, poses significant challenges for conventional noise control methods. Acoustic metamaterials offer a promising alternative by breaking their acoustic limitations and enabling highly efficient and environmentally friendly noise control solutions.

As an essential part of the project team, you will work on

Designing and testing novel metamaterial unit cells

tailored for transformer enclosures.

Numerical modelling

using advanced FEM/BEM techniques to evaluate vibro-acoustic performance.

Experimental field/laboratory testing

of large-scale prototypes in real-world transformer environments.

Assessing human perception of sound quality

and environmental impact of metamaterial designs, including longevity under outdoor conditions.

Communication and dissemination

of research results through presentations at international conferences and high-quality journal publications.

The post is based in the Signal Processing, Audio and Hearing (SPAH) Group within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The ISVR has been at the forefront of research and education in sound and vibration for over 60 years. We have built an international reputation through pioneering academic research, strong and enduring collaborations with industry, and generations of skilled graduates who have spread throughout the acoustics profession. We have excellent experimental facilities including a suite of acoustic chambers.

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds who meet the following criteria:

A PhD (or equivalent) in acoustics, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field. Substantial and authoritative practical knowledge and experience in acoustics and/or vibration, supported by detailed understanding. Basic understanding and knowledge of numerical modelling using the Finite Element Method/Boundary Element Method. Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Felix Langfeldt: F.Langfeldt@soton.ac.uk

Apply by uploading your CV and a cover letter detailing how your skills and experience match the requirements of the role.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work. With a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days we are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.

Apply by 11.59 pm GMT on the closing date. For assistance contact Recruitment on +44(0)2380 592750 or recruitment@soton.ac.uk quoting the job number.
