Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellowship in Smart Manufacturing at Brunel University London.

The fellowship will support activities of a high-pressure die casting (HPDC) pilot line in BCAST, Brunel University London, within the framework of Materials Made Smarter Research Centre (MMSRC). BCAST is one of the world\'s largest light metals research centres; see for more information. MMSRC is the EPSRC supported Made Smarter Research Centre delivered on behalf of UK Research and Innovation\'s (UKRI) Industry Strategy Challenge Fund. The Centre will deliver multidisciplinary research in the area of Digital Manufacturing, through working with academic, commercial and innovation partners, to drive the research needed to solve many of the fundamental challenges limiting the development and adoption of digital tools in materials and manufacturing.

The successful candidate will work on the development of a \'digital twin\' of solidification-based manufacturing processes, mainly HPDC, as part of a cyber-physical system that will allow monitoring, control, and optimisation of process conditions at the microstructure level. The work will include setup, implementation, and verification of physics-based models of microstructure evolution under non-equilibrium solidification conditions, such as in HPDC and additive manufacturing, used in combination with data-driven models of the process, to provide an overview of the process-microstructure relationships, hence, to enable prediction, control, and optimisation of properties of the manufactured products. The work requires close interaction with the academic and industrial partners within the MMSRC besides other researchers in BCAST.

The candidate should have a PhD degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field of science or engineering, with a sound background in numerical modelling. Research experience in modelling of materials processes and working with simulation software are essential. In addition, the candidate should have good communication and presentation skills and be a team player.

Completed application documents, including a covering letter quoting the Job reference, application form, full CV, and the contact details of three referees should be sent to Human Resources, Brunel University London, Uxbridge, Middlesex, UB8 3PH, UK. Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. S. Ji ( ) or Prof. H. Assadi ( ).

Closing date for applications: Thursday 31st August 2023
