About us

------------

The X-ray microscopy and tomography Lab focuses on the development of customised, high-resolution and three-dimensional imaging techniques and on their application to answer research questions. The Francis Crick Institute is an independent charity, established to be a UK flagship for discovery research in biomedicine, with a mission to work without boundaries and across disciplines and to explore biology at all levels. The UCL Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering produces internationally leading research and integrated hands-on education in the heart of London, with close links to major teaching hospitals and industries, and is one of the biggest in the country in this field.

About the role

------------------

We now have an opportunity for a two-year Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in the X-ray microscopy and tomography Lab at The Francis Crick Institute and in the AXIm group at the UCL Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering . This post is part of a research programme funded by the Wellcome Trust.

We are developing a new paradigm in three-dimensional volumetric imaging across multiple length scales. We will be using X-rays, for their ability to propagate through thick and opaque samples and quantitatively measure physical properties of their three-dimensional internal structure. The new instrument will bridge the resolution gap between other well-established microscopy techniques, such as electron and visible light microscopy, and offer an opportunity to catalyse collaborative projects among scientists from diverse backgrounds. The role will offer an opportunity to develop skills in hardware, instrumentations and methods as well as in software, algorithms and data analysis. The new imaging system is under construction, and we are now recruiting a scientist who will lead on the methods development and on the pilot experiments in collaboration with the co-Investigators.

About you

-------------

Ideal candidates should have a background and a PhD in a STEM discipline or demonstrate equivalent experience. Previous experience in the fields of imaging, microscopy, phase contrast or X-rays will be considered as an advantage. Above all, highly motivated, creative and keen on collaborating individuals, capable of independent reasoning and excited about innovative avenues of research will be successful in the selection. The position is offered as full-time two-years fixed term, with a possibility to be extended.
