Salary: Dependent on Experience
Are you passionate about hydrometallurgy and mineral separation? Join us at Altilium, where you'll contribute to cutting-edge research in EV battery recycling alongside a team of experts, all driven by a shared purpose to innovate and lead in clean technology.
The Role
As a Research Scientist at Altilium, you'll leverage your expertise in hydrometallurgy to advance EV battery mineral recovery. You'll research, refine, and optimise our processes, sharing your insights with the wider research and engineering teams to drive continuous improvement.
This wet-lab role spans the full research lifecycle - from planning and execution to reporting. Your work will contribute to our mission of developing a holistic solution for recycling lithium-ion EV batteries, focused on achieving high-purity material streams and unlocking the commercial viability of challenging-to-recover minerals.
What You'll Do
Conduct research in hydrometallurgy, exploring leaching, solvent extraction, ion exchange, precipitation, crystallization, and new material synthesis.
Design and refine hydrometallurgical processes to recover valuable materials from EV battery waste.
Collaborate with engineers to plan and run experimental campaigns in our pilot facilities.
Develop process flow diagrams to streamline recycling operations.
Perform statistical analysis of data to optimise processes and improve recovery outcomes.
What You'll Bring
M.Sc degree in the relevant field, e.g. Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemistry or allied fields.
Understanding of various hydrometallurgical processes
At least 3-years working experience in hydrometallurgy
Understanding fundamentals of leaching, solvent extraction, ion exchange, precipitation and/or other unit operations with applications in recycling and chemical processing.
Experience in characterization techniques and interpretation of data
Willingness to design and build equipment and scientific instruments.
Good written and oral English language skills.
This role would suit someone undertaking a PhD with prior experience in metallurgy. You'll have strong communication skills, thrive in a multidisciplinary environment, and take a proactive approach to problem-solving. Focused on results, you take ownership of your work and deliver against targets.

About Us:
Altilium is a UK-based clean technology group supporting the transformation of the global energy sector from fossil-based to zero-carbon.
Our vision is for a circular and domestic EV battery supply chain, where the critical minerals powering the energy transition are safely recovered from recycling end-of-life EV batteries and mine tailings, saving natural resources and reducing mining.
We are developing the green processing technologies and building at-scale recycling infrastructure to decarbonise the automotive supply chain, providing the lowest carbon, most eco-friendly battery materials for a cleaner transport future.
This is your opportunity to be in at the beginning of the sixth wave industrial revolution, providing circular energy solutions to the UK and Europe as part of a global team.
Our Commitment
We're working to be an inclusive employer and we encourage people from all backgrounds, ways of thinking and working to apply. We love that everyone brings different perspectives and experiences.
We strive to eliminate any barriers that might prevent individuals from showcasing their skills and qualifications. If you require adjustments at any stage of the application process or to the role, please let us know and we'll see how we can accommodate them
